Udupi, Mar 19: People of Parampally near here held protest against illegal sand mining which is being carried out in the area which comes under URZ limits on Sunday March 18.

The locals complained that sand mining activities have been going on almost 5 acres of CRZ land for long.  They said that this has affected houses, agriculture land of the area.  Sand mining has been banned in the area as per the order passed during the meeting of Saligrama town panchayat. Yet it has been going on continuously for long.

The locals went to the place of sand mining on Sunday morning and asked the labourers to stop their work.  Even the sand-laden lorries were held back.  This resulted in verbal brawl between the land owner and protestors.  But police arrived before the situation went out of control and resolved the matter for the time being.
