Udupi, May 1: The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) meeting was held on Thursday April 30 at RTA office Rajathadri, Manipal.

District commissioner (DC) R Vishal heard the grievances of bus, taxi, and auto unions. He strictly warned that he will take stern action against buses which violate the transport regulations.

Taxi unionists complained that many rickshaw owners take their vehicles out of area (out of districts like Shivamogga), and this will affect the income of taxi operators. The DC said that if any such cases are found, he will be strict and cancel their vehicle licenses immediately.

The public raised the issue of vacuum horns and SP Annamalai answered that last month the traffic police held a campaign on this removed 350 vacuum horns out of 600 buses.

In response to the question about action against private buses being used for wedding trips avoiding regular transport duty, he said that the union should bring such cases to their notice and the permits of those buses would be canceled.

These days, road accidents have increased drastically and in order to control this, the DC said that a campaign about road safety and security measures will be held.

Adding to this, the DC said that the national highway work will be completed soon along with traffic signals within one and a half years. After that all vehicles should follow two-way traffic regulations. The RTA has received 50 applications for new licenses, of which 28 have been approved while 8 have been rejected and 14 have been adjourned.

They also received a total of eight other applications seeking license of which six had been rejected while two have been approved and one is pending.

Other issues like reservation seats in buses for senior citizens, the disabled, and for women, excess ticket charges and traffic rules were discussed in the meeting. There are 100 subjects out of 212 and the hearing will be held in next month’s RTA meeting to be held on May 20, 2015.

The meeting was presided over by DC R Vishal. RTO Arun Kumar Singh was present at the meeting.
