Karkala, Mar 26: In a shocking incident a mother plagued by ill-health and worries about future, poisoned her daughter before ending her life on Sunday March 25.
Shanta Shetty (54), a resident of Paldadi near Nitte ended poisoned her daughter Jyothi (32) first and later consumed poison herself. Sources said that Shanta's husband had passed away quite long ago and her only daughter Jyothi was mentally-challenged.
However, she used earn her livelihood by growing jasmine flowers and selling them. But she was fell ill some years ago and could not work for long hours. Despite surgery to her spinal chord, she never recovered. This had pushed her to the brink of distress which might have resulted in ending her life.
She was living in a joint family. On Sunday morning Shanta's mother Appi Shetty had left home to attend a religious programme in a distant place while her aunt Meenakshi had gone for grazing the cattle. Using this opportunity Shanta poisoned her daughter Jyothi and later poisoned herself.
The incident came to light when Meenakshi came home around 11 in the morning. When she did not get any response from Shanta even after calling, she went inside the house where she found both Shanta and Jyothi lying dead.
The Karkala rural police have registered a case in this regard.
