Mangalore, Mar 28: Kadri police have arrested five persons in connection with the assault on Kulur-Kunjathabail corporator Sonia D'Souza on Tuesday March 27. Sonia is still under treatment in a private hospital in the city.

The arrested have been identified as Pradeep Kumar, Ritesh Shetty, Vasanth S, Shailesh Shetty and Prem Kumar.  They were produced in the court which has now remanded them to judicial custody.

As reported earlier Sonia had gone for dinner to a Hotel Tanvi at Bendorewell on Monday March 26 night along with a few Congress party workers.  As they came out after the dinner, a group of nearly 15 persons rounded them up and started enquiring them.

While few of them damaged the windshields of the car, one of them asked Sonia as who she was and why had gone for dinner along with few young men of other faith.  Though Sonia told them that she is a corporator and even showed them her identity card, they did not listen.  One of them slapped Sonia and even kicked her.

But as soon as the locals came to Sonia's help, the assaulters fled the place.  It was later known that the group belonged to the self-proclaimed moral police of the city who had no reason to assault Sonia that that she had gone for dinner with persons of other faith.

The Kadri police have registered the case and are on a hunt to nab the other members of the group.
