Mangalore, Apr 21: Karnataka State Human Rights Council president S K Vivekananda on Thursday promised that the council would look into the issue of rights abuse in the Nagarjuna Thermal Power Plant project in Padubidri.

He told reporters at the Press Club here that the council would work for the causes of local people who were fighting against the project in Padubidri.

To a question on why the council ignored the Nagarjuna issue even after eight years, he said the council had no information on the issue and would request for a detailed report on the issue from its district committee.

Briefing about the national-level workshop, which would be organised by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) at the Karnataka Judicial Academy in Bangalore on April 28, he said the workshop would be inaugurated by Governor T N Chathurvedi and NHRC President Justice Rajendra Babu.

Those NGOs who work in the field of human rights could participate in the workshop, he said and added that two NGOs from each districts would be chosen for the workshop.

Members of the NGO Federation and activists staged a dharna in front of the DC office in Mangalore on Thursday protesting against the draft notification on banning processions. Later, a street play was enacted at the same venue.
