Mangalore, Apr 22: A large number of human right violations are taking place in Karnataka. Hence, a Human Rights Commission in the State should be set up, said M F Saldanha, retired judge of the Karnataka High Court.
He was speaking at a seminar on "Press freedom, human rights and law" on Saturday April 21 evening.
He expressed shock over the recent attacks on human rights and press freedom in Dakshina Kannada and said that denial of bail to journalist B.V. Seetaram and his wife Rohini for 11 days is one of the worst legal atrocities of our times. “Now it is Seetaram, the next may be you” Saldanha opined.
Speaking about the recent notification on the regulation of public gatherings in the district, he said nobody had the right to curtail it unless they have very strong reasons.
PUCL district president P B D’Sa, thinker Bhaskar Mayya, All India Advocates Federation district president Yashwant Maroli were present on the occasion.
