Mangalore, May 5: By-election for the assembly constituency of Ullal will be held on June 2. The election has been caused by the death of MLA U T Fareed.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code, 1973 will be invoked by the deputy commissioner of the district and ex-officio district magistrate M Maheshwar Rao.

He has said that in accordance with Section 144, individuals and traders holding licences to possess weapons have been prohibited from carrying them anywhere within the jurisdiction between May 2 and June 6, 2007.

He also said this step had been taken to ensure peace and order during the incoming election. He also said these orders do not apply to the government employees, security personnel working for banks and industries.

The voters of the Ullal Constituency will have an orientation course on using the electronic voting machines (EVMs) from May 9 to May 11. Demonstration will be done by the taluk officials and they will train the voters to use the machines.
