Udupi, May 6: It is necessary to protect medicinal plants to save human life, said Shri Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math.

Addressing a seminar on medicinal plants organized by the Dhanwantri Seva Parishathan, he said Indians loved forest and nature but in fact they called Charaka and Sushrata ‘rishis’ because of the research conducted by the two on medicinal plants.

He also said that it is the primary duty of every Indian to protect trees and precisely the medicinal plants.

Chairman of Third Finance Commission of the Karnataka A G Kodgi said in recent 15 years there had been a lot of awareness on the Indian culture, so now the government was taking a step to protect the medicinal plants.

Deputy conservator of forests Rajshekhar said temples could play an important role in protecting rare medicinal plants.
