Mangalore, May 8: S Sumanth, managing director of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd (MESCOM) has instructed that use of Kannada is mandatory in administration of MESCOM.

In a circular issued to the staff, Sumanth has directed to use Kannada for all official transactions, and reject and return those internal official letters to the sender, which are not in Kannada.

Referring to the visit of Kannada Authority president to MESCOM and his words of appreciation for implementing Kannada effectively, Sumanth said that it is indeed a great achievement for MESCOM.  “But let us also concentrate on some remarks made by him regarding the decline in they use of Kannada,” he added.

He said that the use of Kannada in official correspondence within the company was not on the expected lines. He further added that the company workforce had a tendency to use English even in situations and contexts where Kannada could be used efficiently.
