Mangalore, May 9: The district is becoming a favourite destination for investment. Hence, the required man-power for the industry must be trained, said deputy commissioner M Maheshwar Rao.

He was speaking about ‘promotion of human skills available in undivided D K district’, at a seminar organized by Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Tuesday May 8 evening.

There are industries looking for labourers and willing to pay. But the required labourers are in shortage. Hence, the skilled labourers required for the industries must be surveyed first, DC opined.

“Human skill is an important area which cannot be neglected. Skills available in India have made this country as a destination for business processing outsourcings (BPO). At the same time we should ensure the growth of skilled sector”, he added.

The district has to target the people who are underemployed even though they have some amount of income, to increase the skilled force here. This could be the major challenge in front of us for the next 3 to 5 years, Maheshwar Rao said.

Capt John Prasad Menezes, president of KCCI, welcomed the deputy commissioner. M Ahmed Bava, office-bearer of KCCI, submitted the memorandum to the deputy commissioner and requested to look into the issue of notification issued by the state government. The notification ordered the traders of Old Mangalore and Old Bunder area to shift their shops to Baikampady APMC yard. Ahmed Bava requested the DC not to shift their shops to Baikampady.

S G Hegde, joint-director of District Industrial Center, office-bearers of KCCI, Kumble Narasimha Prabhu, Srinivas Kamath and Shekhar Pujari were present on the dais.
