10th batch of police constable trainees inaugurated 

• Desist from personal vices, recruits told
• `The department should respond to people's problems'

Mangalore, May 11: The khaki uniform provided to policemen has to be used for protecting the interests of society and not of self, Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) H N Sathyanarayana Rao has said.

The uniform did not accord any special privileges to the policemen to act in a manner detrimental to interests of society, but only increased their responsibility in responding to suffering of common man, he said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the 10th batch of police constable trainees at the Police Training School here on Thursday May 10.

Rao advised the 108 recruits to desist from personal vices. Policemen had to face various kinds of personal and professional challenges while discharging their duties.

It was important that the trainees developed skills to weather these challenges and surmount them with ingenuity, he said.

People, especially the poor, came to police stations with a hope that their grievances would be redressed and it was important the department responded to them in a proper manner, he said. Acknowledging the fact that a majority of the trainees were over qualified educationally for the post they had applied and were selected for, Rao said this was mainly because there were very few jobs in the Government except in the Police Department.

Additional superintendent of police and principal of the school B S Lokesh Kumar said the 10th batch consisted of 87 candidates from Railway Police and 21 from Mysore City Police.

The school had trained 875 civil police constables and 137 women police constables in the previous nine batches, he added.
