Mangalore, May 11: The case of an orphan girl being kept under house-arrest and subsequent torture has come to the knowledge of the locals here on Monday May 7.

The incident took place at Nalligudde near Vittal. Shilpa, studying at government boarding school, is the daughter of Manja and she had joined the school two years ago at Saja.

Her parents were earning daily wages at Puttur. She lost her mother at a young age after which her father got married again and began residing at Puttur.

Eight-year-old Shilpa was kept under house-arrest at the house of one Thotte Abubaker where she was ill-treated. Abubaker’s wife allegedly tortured her with hot frying pans.

The girl, with wounds on her body and little strength to tolerate any more atrocities, fled the place at 9 pm and entered the house of a carpenter Sunder and narrated her story. She even revealed that she had been starved for the past one week.

Sunder took her to the police station from where she was admitted to the hospital. On learning about the incident, Bantwal tahsildar Achuth, taluk labour inspector, Vittal GP president John D’Souza, visited the girl at the hospital and discussed further action. Meanwhile, locals gathered in front of the hospital urging the officials to take immediate action against the culprits.

Two persons have been arrested in this regard. The police allegedly did not take any action till the tahsildar visited the spot. It is also suspected that Shilpa’s father might have sold her to Abubaker.
