Mangaluru, Jul 17: Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim chaired a meeting which was held to decide about the architectural structure in establishing a memorial park for the 2010 Mangaluru air crash victims near Kulur bridge where 12 unidentified bodies of the victims had been buried. The meeting was held at DC’s office here on Friday July 17.

A 90 acre land which belongs to New Mangaluru Port Trust is being developed as a memorial park at a cost of Rs 35 lac by NMPT. The memorial park is expected to be ready by September this year.

Raajappa, superintendent engineer NMPT said, "The gardening work has already started and it would be completed by the end of August but the structure for the memorial needs to be finalized."

In the meeting, it was decided that a competition would be conducted by the Architects' Guild and architects coming up with the best designs would be awarded with a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 for the first and second places respectively. The design would be finalized within a month.

President of Mangaluru air crash victims' association Mohammed Beary speaking to the media said, "A memorial for 158 people who lost their lives in the 2010 air crash was much required. The land chosen for the memorial park is ideal. I thank the district administration and the deputy commissioner for taking up this project and starting the work as it was pending from a long time. We had requested the civil aviation ministry and Air India but no one showed any interest in the construction of the memorial."

Better have a memorial with all names displayed to be maintained by the air port at the air port itself.

Save 90 acres for tourism or IT / BT projects, that will create precious jobs.

Why do we need a park? What about the existing parks? The existing parks are not maintained and a few of them closed. There are so many people without shelter in Mangalore and the DC is interested in building a park. I really cannot understand why do you need 90 acres of land to build a memorial park, will it be maintained in future or just forgotten. DC must first think of footpaths on the main roads in Mangalore.

A granite plaque with victims' names would suffice.
After reading abt competion prize money, what park-amusement? Best design would be plane on fire nose-diving into the ground..great! But this looks like mockery of a tragedy - can't say anything more

This is an absolute joke. 50 K & 25 K prize for the best design??? Is this some sort of competetion??? President of Air Crash Victims Committee....This is the height of nonsense. Yesterday 17 Jul 2015 marked 1 year since MH 17 was shot down over Ukraine in which 58 Australians died. Yesterday a plague was unvieled with names of the 58 Australians that died and the soil on which the plague is set is bought from the crash site by AFP officers who were the first responders. It was very somber to see this. Yet after years of the M'lore crash meeting are held...great....

my homage and condolences to the departed and their families... but 90 acres near airport for a park? I am sure, all Seculars and peacefuls will like this, but they will have a problem with Sardar patel statue, that will be a hub for business and tourism! so many here are politically blinded.
