Bengaluru: 17,000 fresh faces to propel starved Karnataka police force

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Aug 21: The state home department has set the process of recruiting 8,500 policemen to strengthen its police force. Home minister, K J George, said that his department has decided to make appointment 8,500 additional personnel to the department, and that a proposal on this plan has already been submitted to finance department.

He said that state chief minister, Siddaramaiah, has already agreed in-principle for the appointment of fresh batch of 8,500 policemen. “I will soon hold consultation with the secretary in finance department and get the department's nod for the proposal, and then set into motion the process of appointing 8,500 more people afresh,” he added.

The minister noted that about 22,000 posts have remained unfilled in police department as of date, and that the government proposes to fill this gap and also the vacancies arising out of annual retirements by making 8,500 new appointments to police force every year.

He said that in order to stop delays in completion of the process of appointment process, rules will be framed to the effect that names of those who pass physical fitness tests are added to the waiting list for being considered in the next batch of appointments.

The minister noted that during every process, the number of applications received is 20 to 30 times of the number of vacancies. All these candidates undergo written tests, physical fitness tests, verification of documents etc, after which only the number of people necessary are absorbed from out of those who clear them. “Instead of following this long process every time, we propose to keep those who have passed physical fitness test in waiting list for one to two years and consider them for appointment as and when new vacancies arise and appointments are made,” he explained.

He said that it has been decided to enhance the holiday allowance being given to policemen working on holidays to Rs 400 from the previous Rs 200. The chief minister has agreed for this proposal, and orders would be issued soon on this subject, he clarified. The minister said that daily honorarium payable to home guards volunteers has been raised from Rs 300 per day to Rs 400 in the city, and for other centres in the state, honorarium has been hiked to Rs 325 from the earlier Rs 250.

Dear Mr. Henry, our police force is so short of staff there in no way they can be efficient. They are putting in 16-18 hours of work on a normal day. If there is a VIP visit, then it is worse. This is a good move by the government, they just have to get the recruiting process correct. Forget reservations, forget caste, forget religion.

It is an excellent idea to increase the emoluments of The Police Force. Considering the working conditions of Policemen and the number of hours of work they put in , it is expedient that they are looked after well and provided with allowances and facilities to compensate to some extent for the extra hours of work they put in.

Increase the efficiency instead of hiring more dumb people in to police force. We just need to copy developed countries. Just numbers does not matter.

Efficiency matters but not to that effect in policing. To solve cases you need intelligent people but to prevent riots and robbery, you need physical presence. Moreover its employment to our own people. Well-done home ministry.
