Dance bars to reopen in Maharashtra as Supreme Court puts ban on hold

NEW DELHI, Oct 15 (NDTV): The controversial law banning dance bars in Maharashtra, which provided employment to thousands of women, was put on hold by the Supreme Court today.

Dance bars have been a contentious issue in the state, where the government branded them as fronts for prostitution.

In 2005, the police cracked down on dance performances in bars. Elite establishments, including five star hotels, were exempted.

In 2013, after the top court ruled that dance bars will be allowed to operate, the Maharashtra assembly passed the law in June 2014, banning dance bars. All political parties were on the same page on the issue and the law was passed unanimously without a debate.

The estimated 700 establishments across Maharashtra state employed more than 75,000 women who performed Bollywood-style dance routines and received cash tips.

The dancers' union had opposed the ban, saying many of its members would be forced into prostitution if the state refused to allow dance performances.

The BJP Government of Maharastra is very keen to make Mumbai as the holy city of India, totally sinless. Many NGOs working with the desperate people of India, their funding was chocked by the BJP Government, blaming for religious conversion.

Taking the eating rights of the citizens using the religious sword, is it forced conversion?

Mr. CM of Maharastra, what you are doing to rescue the thousands in the red light districts of Mumbai called Karmarthipura?

No beef and no dance, the holy land of India. Glad that the SC of India has taken a rational decision.

simple question. when it was banned, I assume enough pros and cons were considered and based on the final outcome, then court and judge would have passed the verdict banning the ladies bar. now all of sudden another court banning the order, no idea what does that mean... if these things continue, no respect for any verdict by any court and judge because tomorrow anybody can question it back at another court and judgment can be reversed. what stupid system we are in....

Ladies bars are majorly frequented by those having access to illegal money like corrupted Govt. officers etc. or rich business, and almost all of them second as pick up joints and inhouse prostitution!! Scores of men's families have been destroyed who used to frequent these dance bars!! The girls who work in these bars are so attractive, it seems they will give our beautiful screen devis a run for their money, that is why when a man goes there a few times he will be so obsessed with one or other beauty and they know how to squeeze and remove as much money as possible making the man a pauper over a period of time!!

But as some say, these bars do not force anybody to patronize them and people go there voluntarily and destroy themselves and their families in the bargain!! Jai Hind!

Dance bars definitely look like hubs for prostitution. Young kids like 13 or 14 take stage to dance at these places. It looked like school stage.
This was my experience when I accidentally entered such a place.
I definitely feel it should be banned.
And why it is thought that those girls have prostitution as the only choice if dance bars are banned?
Isn't that a serious question to ponder?
Isn't it because they have already exposed to some training in this field.
Girls please take care of yourselves.. This is not the place to be. You deserve a better life.

Why dance bars stopped in a biggest democratic country like India and cosmopolitan city like Mumbai? If the prostitution is excuse, it is already open and legal in Mumbai. Good judgement by the SC. Hope the business will boom in Maharashtra.
No one is forced to go the Dance bars. Those who want to go for entertainment and want to work there with their own wish let them do it. What is the problem for others???
