  • 92nd birth anniversary of former chief minister observed

Udupi, Aug 21: Medical Education Minister V S Acharya inaugurated the 92nd birth anniversary celebrations of former chief minister and champion of the backward classes Devaraj Urs, organized by the district administration, here on Monday, August 20.

Speaking on the occasion, Acharya stated that the former chief minister was a person responsible for providing the weaker sections with facilities on the lines of the Havanur report of 1974.

Elaborating on his achievements, Acharya informed that Devaraj Urs was mainlyly  involved in implementing the land reforms which made the tiller the owner of the land. A number of irrigation projects had been implemented during the regime of Devaraj Urs. Due to his endeavors several hydel power projects were implemented during his tenure as chief minister, he added.

Acharya also lauded Urs as a good administrator, who worked tirelessly for the upliftment of the weaker sections and farmers. Acharya further stated that the Karnataka Development Front Government had implemented schemes such as “Bhagya Lakshmi” and “Sandhya Suraksha”.

B Girish welcomed the gathering. president of Udupi zilla panchayat B N Shankar Poojary presided over the function. Vice president of zilla panchayat Sharad Bijur, zilla panchayat members Bhujanga Shetty and Kota Srinivas Poojary, and chief executive officer of zilla panchayat P Hemalata were present.
