Applications invited for Mandd Sobhann programmes:
 
Those teams interested in presenting programmes for the year 2008, have been requested to contact the organizers Mandd Sobhann-Kalaangann Mhoinealli Manchi by October 30. Those within the city jurisdiction will be paid Rs.10,000 apart from practice allowance of Rs 2,000, whereas those outside the city will be paid Rs.15,000 and Rs.3,000 for practice informed a press release here.

Rehearsal arrangements will be made at Kalaangann. Charges for mikes, electricity, generator and publicity will be borne by Mandd Sobhann. At the end of the programme, performers will be given 15 minutes time to release their book, cassette or CD. 

On November 4, the Carvalho-Gharannem Thomas Stephen Konkani Kendr -2007 artiste award will be presented at Mhoinealli Manchi. The award is presented to an artiste for his/her life time contribution to any one of the art forms like vovyo-verse, gummot, brass band, harikathe, christmas dance, Konkani yakshagana, kolata, fire show and any other folk art.  

Persons interested in the above may send in their applications with full details about themselves and their art along-with their photograph by October 20. The applications must be sent to Kalaangann, Makale, Shakthi Nagar, Mangalore- 575 016.
 
Elected President:
 
SDM College, Ujire principal Dr Yashovarma has been elected as the president of Mangalore University first grade college principal’s association, stated a press release. 

Other office-bearers are SDM college of Business Management principal Dr Devaraj K, Besant evening college principal Prof Sulochana  (Vice-president),  Madhava Pai Memorial college principal prof P Dayanand Shetty, Nehru Memorial college principal Prof K V Damodar Gowda (joint secretary), Besant Women’s college principal Dr Manjula K T (treasurer). 

Games Meet:

A cluster-level games meet of Udupi Cluster was held at the JNV, DK recently. Deputy Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao inaugurated the meet. 

Different competitions were held for boys and girls as part of the programme. A total of 285 participants from six JNVs participated in the meet.

Durga Puja Celebrations:

Durga Pooja will be celebrated in the city. For the function, the Durga Puja and Dasara Celebration Committee (DPDCC) is making elaborate arrangements, informed committee president Debabrata Sanyal. 

The Durga puja will be celebrated in traditional Bengali style here, with the help of idol makers, priests and drummers who have come all the way from Kolkata. In fact the idol of Durga devi is being made in Krishna Achar Palke Hall in Ballalbagh in the city.

According to the Sanyal puja will start on October 17, the sixth day of Navrathri and will continue till Vijayadashami on October 20. Bengalis based in Manipal, Puttur, Sulliya and other places will come to participate in the celebrations. Various programmes like devotional songs, Bengali drama, dance and other cultural items will be held on the occasion. The chief guest on the occasion will be IGP (Western range) Ashit Mohan Prasad.
