Farmer earns Re 1 after selling one tonne of onions!

Pune, May 24 (PTI): In a bizarre claim, a farmer has said he could earn only Re 1 from sale of nearly a tonne of onions at the district Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC).

According to Devidas Parbhane, 48, the fall in onion prices is already taking a toll and like him, several others have got a 'raw deal' despite a bumper crop this season.

"Every day, we are hearing news about farmer suicides from drought-hit regions. However, with onion prices touching new lows, farmers like me may be meeting the same fate," said Parbhane, the sole bread-earner for his family of five.

Parbhane explains the math: he has two acres of farm land in which he grew onions by spending Rs 80,000.

"On May 10, I sent 952 kg of onions in 18 gunny bags through a truck to the Pune-based Agriculture Produce Market Committee and received Rs 16 per 10 kg. So, per one kg, it works to one rupee and sixty paise," said Parbhane.

"The total onion was sold for Rs 1,523.2. Out of the earnings, the middlemen took away Rs 91.35 as commission, labour charges were Rs 59 and Rs 18.55, and Rs 33.30 was paid against miscellaneous charges. Rs 1,320 was paid to the truck driver, who transported the produce to APMC."

He claimed that after all the deductions, he is taking home only Re 1. He was informed that the prices of onion had plunged drastically that particular day.

"I was expecting at least Rs 3 per kg. However, I was disappointed after receiving such a deal," the farmer said. "For four months, I took care of my produce and watered the onions at the time of load-shedding. Forget the profit, I am unable to recover even my expenditure on growing onions."

There were no comments on the farmer's claim from APMC. Local media reports quoted the trader who bought the onion as saying that produce was of smaller size and inferior quality.

Meanwhile, a delegation of onion traders and APMC members from Lasalgaon in Nashik has met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis seeking his intervention on the issue of plummeting prices of onions.

Bloody hell in Bangalore the price is Rs.30 per KG. I dont understand what is government doing to safeguard the farmers. If the farmer would bring the onions to Bangalore he could earned a better price here. Why is there no security to farmers and what happened to the pro farmer government?

If by 'People' you mean consumers like you and me then we are already paying a substantial amount.

Its the middle men - whole sellers and retailers who squeeze the blood out of the farmers.

They don't work even the money they invest in the purchase of onions from the farmers is borrowed from the banks for which we the consumers pay the interest.

Its a mockery that the rich get richer and the poor poorer in this dirty world of ours.

Govt. should do something when there is too much produce. They can export the onions outside country and get some money for the poor farmers.

It is a well-known and documented fact in India that if the consumer pays Rs.10 for a produce, the farmer gets approximately Rs.1. The rest of the Rs.9 is pocketed by the middle men. Therefore the middle men with the help of politicians keep away the multinationals that could directly source the produce from farmers and then sell them to the consumers thus eliminating the middle-men. This way both the farmer and consumer get the benefit. Unless there is a political will, nothing is going to happen and the politicians will shred crocodile tears and fool the public.

FARMING business is a tough business. Scarcity of suitable labor force, scarcity of water due to non-arrival of timely rains and the growing costs of all the rest of the needs including growing inflation will obviously burden each and every farmer - no one is excluded. Farming Industry has been impacted all over the world, including the United States where the Government used to pay high subsidies and incentives to the farmers several years ago.

The most important feature of farming business is the creation of the "dignity of labor". The farmer is a dignified person, self reliant and also a "Master" of his own destiny with a possession of a happy and peaceful family. In North America, thousands of farmers have been heavily subsidized by giving lavish loans for investment in heavy machinery and also lavish irrigation support. But at the end of the day there is a cost attached and the cost is not easily recoverable due to lack of enough yield, rising costs and growing loans.

The problems attached to farming on account of all the above reasons are one too many and the solutions are just handful. We all sail on the same boat, and we have no other choice but carry on our journey by being positive in our thinking.

God is the only hope, and God is the best help. That's the only way I can conclude from a distance where my eyes and my mind is focused on my little "mini farm" for the past 49 years where I am always built with a positive attitude that "tomorrow" will be good, and "tomorrow" will bring for me a better fruit.

Farmers are the worst sufferers in this business. They till their land day in and day out and in the end they get peanuts. Only the middle man is happy as he gets his share without doing nothing. God help these farmers as their situation is becoming from bad to worst.

It is very sad and horrible situation of farmers. These people who keep the nation healthy and no one care. Military keep us safe and farmers keeps us healthy. Why our Governments both Central & State are so irresponsible to act in this issue. Find the scientific way to preserve onions. Let the farmers grow healthy food so we Indians can live better life. I know our ministers are busy in blaming each other and telling lies. Hope they all must commit suicide and or to be ki.....Thank You.

If Farmers are facing problem due to excess rain, drought, heat wave or any other natural calamity, we cannot fully blame State or Central Govts. But, if farmer’s suffering due to Govt’s mindless policies, then, there is no excuse at all….. like in Maharastra, Cow slaughter is banned & farmers cursing Govt for this, because, people themselves struggling for survival & Govt forcing them to take burden of their Cows/pets too.
