Udupi, Nov 15: President of the Karnataka State Cooperative Apex Bank M N Rajendra Kumar said on Wednesday that all institutions in the cooperative sector required professional management to survive in the present-day competitive environment. He was speaking after inaugurating the 54th All-India Cooperative Week here.

Kumar said that the first Prime Minister of the country, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, had contributed a lot to the development of the cooperative sector.

Autonomy should be given to institutions in the cooperative sector so that they would be able to take quick decisions. The cooperative sector had been prompt in transferring the benefits of government schemes to the public. For instance, cooperative institutions were providing subsidised loans to its members under government schemes.

He said that in a recent meeting, the Udupi district administration had decided to sell 10 acres of land of the Brahmavar Sugar Factory to raise funds.

Condition

The district administration had sought a no-objection certificate (NOC) for this purpose from cooperative institutions. Kumar directed Udupi District Cooperative Union president Kishan Hegde Kolkebail to give the NOC on the condition that the dues of the factory to cooperative institutions would be cleared. B Sadashiva Shetty welcomed the gathering. President of Korangarapady Sahakari Vyavasayik Bank A Sridhar Shetty, Deputy Registrar of Cooperatives M Basappa, professor at Government First Grade College Gopalkrishna Gaonkar and cooperative leader K K Saralaya were present.
