M'lore: Dowry Case - Court Slaps One Year Imprisonment, Fine to Doc

Mangalore, Nov 21: In connection with a dowry harassment case, the JMFC court in Chikmagalur has sentenced Dr Mohammed Ashraf and his father Abdul Ajeej to imprisonment term and even slapped a fine of Rs 1.55 lac.

According to a press release, the court has sentenced the mother and sister of Asharaf to one year imprisonment and also a fine of Rs 5,000. Dr Mohammed Ashraf a resident of Kaana in Suratkal, was married to Dr Sumaiah Reshma, a resident of Chikmagalur. At the time of their marriage, a dowry of Rs 3 lac and gold ornaments worth lac of rupees was given by the bride’s family to the accused.

Dr Ashraf, his parents and sister were not satisfied with the dowry which was given during the marriage.  They then began harassing and demanding more dowry even after the marriage. Dr Reshma unable to bear the torture, left for her parental home and filed a complaint against her husband and in-laws.

Dr Reshma a gold medalist from Yenepoya Medical college.

    The court should make sure that they get punished. we have been hearing that court issued sentences but many of them get escaped from the verdict using their political influence. Shame to Dr. Mohammed Ashraf who suppose to give mahar not to take dowry.

    Hats off to JMFC court of Chickmagalore. If the boy want to be sold himself, then better his father put him for auction. Let the buyer pay the full amount then let his daughter get him married. Instead of ruining the life of a innocent girl. These kind of people are like cancer and the cancer has to be removed from the body.

    I happened to know this case. I know Aziz also when he was in Saudi.I think we should all join together to fight the dowry menace.The jamath office bearers and our repected Ulemas should give all support to the people who fight against dowry.

    Really this is an eye opener for those culprits, who does't have the honor to threat the human being, specially WOMAN. These types of harrassment has to be brought out by the bride's family before they get suffered. They have to expose whoever indulge in this issues and the whole community should support those who bring up these types of happenings. Those families who indulge in dowries should be cornered.

    i appreciate reshma's bold decision...but i would suggest all our girls..plss dont marry a person who demands dowry by cash or kind...

    "DOWRY". The word itself creates fear in most of the human hearts. Only inhuman people demand for dowry. The accused himself being a doctor has ruined his name by harassing his wife for more dowry. I dont think there is any religion which preach to demand for dowry. This society has created the most worst system of dowry. This system is more common in people below poverty line. All the accused in dowry case should be punished with life imprisonment or death sentence.

    This desease of dowry can be totally eradicated if all people think positive. Parents of girls should never give their daughter in marriage to a person who demands dowry. All the victims of dowry should take courage and knock the door of court to get justice. Dr. Reshma and her parents has set an example to the society by pulling their in-laws to the court. Hats off to you.
