Mangaluru, Oct 15: Through a judgement passed on Friday October 14, the principal district and sessions court in the city convicted three persons accused of ganja trafficking. They have been handed ten years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) each and a fine of one lac rupees each.

The persons who have been sentenced happen to be Sayyed Anees Ahmed (56), residing near Teresian College Mysuru, his son, Mansoor Ahmed (31), and Ansar Pasha (48), residing near Muttamma temple at Shankarpura, Chikkamagaluru. In case of failure on the part of the concerned to pay fine, they will remain behind bars for six more months, the judge said in his order.

The trio was arrested from near Bunder dock here with ganja on March 11, 2013 by the then police inspector of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances unit, B S Sathish, and inspector of coastal security police station, Y Gangireddy. 34.6 kg of ganja worth Rs 8.65 lac, cellphones, and cash were found in their possession. Later, inspector, Gangireddy, had filed a charge sheet against the accused in the court.

Judge of the district principal and sessions court, Uma M G, had recorded statements of five witnesses. Judge, K S Beelagi, who heard both the sides, concluded that the crime has been established. In the case, special public prosecutor, Pushpraraj Adyantaya, had appeared on behalf of the prosecution.
