Mangaluru, Nov 29: Police have come across an incident in which SIM was issued in the name of a retail shop that is not in existence. This finding has taken police officials by surprise.

During the period the police personnel from Barke station in the city investigated the source of the SIM of a cellphone confiscated from an inmate of district prison here, they found that it was issued in the name of a woman from Shaktinagara here. When they delved further into the matter, the police found that a shop named 'Cellmagic' had issued the said SIM but no such shop exists in the city. So, the police suspect that this was done by either SIM suppliers or the companies for earning profit. The police are trying to get more information from the company that has provided connection to the phone.

In this respect, police of Barke have taken into custody a supplier of SIM functioning from a building near KSRTC bus stand. He is being interrogated to bring out the truth, they added.

Police are also pooling information about the SIMs used based on IMEI numbers of cellphones. Surprisingly, when Barke police inspector, Rajesh, questioned Sumitra, in whose name this SIM stands, she said she had never bought this SIM. The police are now pooling together information about the person who used the mobile phone concerned.

As EMEI numbers disclose information about SIM numbers and other records, prisoners have been destroying the EMEI numbers of their phones, it is said. The police department is preparing to take strict measures against people behind issuance of SIM on the basis of fake records, and the shops, suppliers and companies supporting these fraudulent transactions.
