Mumbai: Govt defends decision on Maratha reservation

Mumbai, Dec 6 (Zee News): Eighty percent of people of the Maratha community are socially and economically backward, the Maharashtra government told the Bombay High Court, defending its decision to grant reservation to Marathas.

The state government wants to grant reservation to the community in government jobs and educational institutions across the state.

In a 2500-page affidavit to the Court, the government defended its decision in response to a series of petitions against the move, IANS reported.

The final hearing of the petitions will be on December 7.

There is no rhyme or reason for the reservation for all Marathas even if 100% are economically underprivileged. Marathas form the majority in the state, and at that rate none in the minority, including the economically under-privileged will ever get a government job! If the High Court does not set aside the reservation, I hope the Supreme Court will.
