Udupi, May 19: Manipal Jewellery Management Institute in association with Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will organize a workshop on hallmarking gold jewellery on Thursday May 22.

Speaking to press persons here on Sunday May 18, institute director Prof Madhav Shanbhag informed that the workshop has been organized in view of the government's order to mandatorily hallmark gold jewellery. The workshop also aims at creating awareness among jewellery owners, designers and retailers about the necessity of hallmarking jewellery, he added.

He further said that Manipal University deputy vice-chancellor S S Pabla, Bangalore BIS chief Narayanappa and G Jaya Acharya of Udupi Jewellers' Association will be the chief guests.

The programme will be presided over by Manipal University registrar Dr G K Prabhu.

Hallmarking has been made mandatory by the government to ensure that customers do not get cheated, he informed and added that at present the process is done only at Bangalore which is causing inconvenience to the goldsmiths in the coastal region. There are plans to start a branch of BIS in Mangalore to cater to this demand, he said.
