Mangaluru: Non-disbursement of salary - garbage collectors resort to flash strike

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Nov 22: Workers of the company to which garbage collection work of the city has been entrusted to, went on flash strike on Tuesday November 21. As such, garbage disposal work within the city corporation limits came to a grinding halt.

Mumbai-based Antony Waste Handling Cell (Pvt) Ltd has been entrusted with the task of collection of garbage from the doors of the city dwellers and transporting it to the garbage dump-yard at Vamanjoor. On an average, 300 to 320 tonnes of garbage gets accumulated in the city. 680 workers spread over 150 vehicles are involved with the task of collection and transportation of garbage. As garbage was not picked on Tuesday, waste could be seen spread out at various places, with the situation turning worse on account of street dogs and birds.

The city corporation, it is learnt, was to remit payment due for two months of September and October to the waste collection company. Out of Rs 4.5 crore that is due, Rs 1.75 crore has been credited to bank account. The corporation, it is said, has assured the company to credit Rs 50 lac to its account on Wednesday. It is also gathered that as per the bilateral agreement, additional money arising out of revision of minimum wages and hike in petrol and diesel costs have also to be paid to the company by the corporation since a year.

City mayor, Kavita Sanil, corporation commissioner and officials held a meeting with the representatives of the company on Tuesday evening. The corporation reportedly promised to clear the dues, and the garbage collection is expected to resume on Wednesday. The mayor said that the company has assured to take up garbage collection work from Wednesday.

Please change the contract from Anthony and give to Pathanjali waste collection services Ltd to clear the waste of Mangalore. MCC can save a lot as their rates are much cheaper and they are very prompt in collection.

Antony waste management is doing a good job everyday. They do better than the ones in big cities like Bangalore. MCC collects the money from citizens for garbage collection but not pay the company.

The DC must interfere and the amount to Antony must pay through DC only. Our MCC is not paying properly. Some big lobby is behind this. Or give this contract to Ramakrishna Mutt volunteers. They keep the city clean.

These type of flash strikes were unheard of many years ago. Only now it has become a fashion (compelled fashion). I remember my uncle (now retired happily) who worked as a motorman in the Central Railway suburban services (Bombay Division) telling me that in those days all services falling under the essential services (transport, milk supply, ambulances and medical care, fire brigade, electricity, water supply, sanitation and corporation utilities .. and the list goes on ..... were strictly demarcated under a legal procedure. Example : If any person was employed under these benchmark jobs, they were compelled to sign a bond/agreement NEVER to resort to any strikes/bandhs etc. that had a recurring impact on the smooth flow of work. No matter what, even if people resorted to such tactics, the employees had to go out of their way and make every effort to nullify the impact. Today the politicians openly resort to nefarious activities and the common person is compelled to take an active part in it so that its after effects can put pressure on the authorities and yield its desired results/outcome. At this rate, our country would have already gone to the dogs very soon. This is the beginning of the end.

The topic is about stoppage of garbage collection. Your message is adding to the garbage. Criticise BJP as much as you wish (they deserve it) but talk sense please. Some wise person said ...something may be better than nothing ..at times, but nothing is better than nonsense!

The Corporation(MCC) has to be prompt in paying for the essential services without any delay so that the city remains one of the cleanest in our state. Garbage collection company workers should not be allowed to indulge in a flash strike for non-payment of their salaries. Not acceptable …

This is not the first time this kind of farce is being played. It seems like NAANU HODEDA HAAGE MAADUTHENE, NEENU ATHTHA HAAGE MAADU game being played by Antony Waste Handling and the City Corporation. If Antony Waste Handling Cell is not able to manage itself, why doesn't the Mayor - who has shown her 'IRON FIST' in 'dealing' with various other issues - take the firm step of terminating Antony Waste's services and appointing other waste collectors?
