Mangaluru, Mar 2: Police commissionerate and traffic department, on Friday, March 2, felicitated city traffic wardens at the police commissioner office.

T R Suresh, police commissioner, Hanumantharaya, IPS, DCP (Law and Order), Uma Prashanth, KSPS, DCP (Crime and Traffic) and veteran traffic warden Joe Gosalves were present.

Commending the service of traffic wardens in the city, T R Suresh said, “Mangaluru is growing rapidly. Along with development, people’s lifestyle is also changing. There is a huge increase in the number of vehicles in city. Traffic officials are facing difficulties in controlling traffic in the city mainly due to the various development projects undertaken in the city. Meanwhile, narrow roads in the city also lead to heavy traffic in the peak hours,"

"We have 6.50 lac vehicles registered under Mangaluru and Bantwal RTO. Several vehicles enter the city from neighboring state Kerala as well. We have four traffic police stations in city, but there is high pressure on traffic police personnel. Two and half years ago, under ACP Udaya Naik, traffic warden system was introduced in the city. Joe Gonsalves, now a 96-year-old senior citizen and a true lover of the city, voluntarily came forward to become a traffic warden. From the past two and half years, he is continuously rendering his service as the chief traffic warden. I thank him for his service which he is doing without any remuneration. He is a role model for all of us who think about social responsibility," he added.

“Today, we have eleven traffic wardens in the squad. Traffic wardens spend their valuable time to maintain smooth traffic in the city. They also help traffic police to levy fine on traffic offenders. I am thankful to all of them. I cannot evaluate their service in words. It is my kind request to associations and organisations who are engaged in various social activities in the city to join traffic warden squad. If they show special interest in maintaining traffic in the city, definitely, we can get more members enrolled as traffic wardens," he informed.

“I thank NRI businessman Micheal D’Souza for his concern towards traffic wardens. He has sponsored the cash prize for each warden considering their service and social responsibility. There is no doubt that Micheal’s act of generosity will encourage our traffic wardens,” he said.

Joe Gonsalves said, “Being human, we should have the obligation to help people. Serving the public is a social responsibility and everyone should do this. When we think of doing something good for the society, we get various options to do so. When I decided to serve people, I got the idea of traffic warden. ACP Udaya Naik supported me. Now it is my request to all, especially young people, that they should join this squad in large numbers.”

Along with Joe Gonsalves, traffic wardens Roshan Patrao, Deenath D’Sa, Maxim Francis Moras, J Mohammad, James Madtha, Sujith Noronha, Mary Periera, Mavis Rodrigues, Clifford D’Souza, Joel Ashok Fernandes, and Harry Prashanth Miranda were feliciated by the police commissioner with cash, memento and shawl.

To put it in simple words, we are grateful to the Commissioner, Deputy Commissioners of Police, Assistant Police Commissioners of Police, and the entire Traffic Police department for giving us an opportunity to serve the city of Mangalore and for their wholehearted support. We are also thankful to Mr. Michael D'Souza for his kind gesture. Like any other warden, I have only two requests to my fellow Mangaloreans - First, join the Squad and help the people be safe on road (both inside/on the vehicle and on the road). Second, follow traffic rules and drive/walk with discipline.

Once again I refer to the observations made by Mr. Jeevan. I withdraw my statement. I do not know who he refers to. I meant the tall man who always in uniform and very often he works in nanthoor. His name is Maxim Moras and his work is commendable.

I am pleased to respond the observations made by Mr. Jeevan in his comments. It is not my intention to uphold or support our wardens in general. However they have a difficult job to do under difficult circumstance. JEEVAN.... I do not exactly know who you think is rude to the people. However we have a tall man in Nanthoor who is doing a VERY GOOD JOB. This area is difficult to manage because of heavy traffic. Despite that the person concerned is doing his best. He is a workaholic scarifying a lot of time for the welfare of the people.

You mean well but here is a situation which you have not adequately understood. I would be pleased o meet you personally and acquaint you with prevailing situation ad even go with you for a spot inspection. Please do not hesitate to contact me on joegonsalves@yahoo.com

    Thank you.

With due respect to the selfless service of the traffic wardens, I personally feel the traffic police should deploy more policemen for managing traffic and not depend on public service. This is a critical job and thus requires competent personnel.

Congratulations Uncle Joe. Your concern for the public and sense of social responsibility is awe inspiring. May God bless you with many more years of good health. Work done by Mangalore police both Law & Order/Traffic and Traffic Wardens is noteworthy. Perhaps the best in the State.

If you need more Traffic Wardens, first thing you should do is get rid of Pvt buses from roads, introduce only govt buses, remove their horrible irritating horns which make any two wheeler riders scared leading to accidents.

    Dear Mangalore City Traffic Police,

Highly appreciate honouring for the selfless service to the Traffic Wardens of Mangalore. They've really inspired our minds in controlling the traffic. But I would also like to bring to your kind notice and also request you to consider certain other people from within your department(Traffic). We have a old man (Traffic Constable); Shetty Sir (I hope I'm getting his name right). I always see him standing & doing his selfless duty at the Busiest Nanthoor Junction and I suppose at present he is posted at KPT Junction. I still remember Sir U.T. Khader had honoured him in public at the very same Nanthoor Junction.

Please honour such other people also who have done selfless duties from so many years. Such honours from the department will motivate them much more in furnishing their duties.

Well done and congratulations to the wardens.
However i found many a times some of the the wardens behaving / body language being aggressive rather than friendly. May be the unruly traffic makes them so...
Friendly traffic wardens with a positive attitude may even have a positive effect on the drivers !!

Hats off to the City traffic police and the Traffic wardens. I always appreciate your dedication inspite of scorching sun and pollution of the vehicles. You deserve to be truly honoured.
Meanwhile I would like to bring to your notice that a person wearing specs, without any uniform (may not be a wardern) controlling the traffic at nanthoor circle. He acts rudely with motorists and behaves like he is the chief of the Dept. Kindly donot entertain these people who spoil your name and service.

Am really happy about the Mangalore Cops Quick response and service even I have remembered the Traffic Cop Near the Bunts Hostel Circle repairing the Road Damages by getting the hammer other kinds of stuff by self, and the next couple of Days I have noticed that he has priced for the good work by the City commissioner.

    IMO:
    1) Private Bus Speed/Sound Horn should be avoided in the City Limits.
2)KSRTC/Kerala Govt Buses can be avoided by entering the city.(Using the KPT Junction)
