Ball-tampering row: Steve Smith, David Warner banned for 1 year

Sydney, Mar 28(PTI): Steve Smith and David Warner have reportedly been banned for one year, ruling them out of the home series against India, while Cameron Bancroft was handed a nine-month suspension as Cricket Australia came down heavily on the errant trio which disgraced itself in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

"Steven Smith and David Warner, formerly captain and vice-captain of Australia, have been banned for 12 months by Cricket Australia for their roles in the pre-meditated plan to tamper with the ball on the third day of the Cape Town Test against South Africa," 'ESPNCricinfo' reported.

Smith, Warner and Bancroft were sent back home midway into the Test series against South Africa after admitting that they plotted to tamper the ball with a sandpaper in the third Test in Cape Town.

However, chief coach Darren Lehmann was surprisingly given a clean chit after CA concluded its preliminary investigations yesterday.

Tim Paine will captain Australia in the final Test match in Johannesburg with reinforcements in middle-order batsman Glenn Maxwell along with openers Joe Burns and Matt Renshaw scheduled to arrive tomorrow.

Earlier, Warner stepped down as IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper, days after Smith gave up his captaincy of the Rajasthan Royals.

Media reports stated that the three players have a week to appeal against the sanctions.

The difference this time is that Australian players have been caught out, and that has shamed the fans who revered their national team and believed it to be above even the need to cheat. Steve Smith is not the only high-profile name who has been caught in the ball-tampering row. Stars of the game like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid have also fallen prey to ball-tampering.

Priyanka SRT was unnecessarily dragged into ball tampering controversy in that infamous test in SA when Match Referee Mike Dennesse went crazy and took action against almost half of India team. He was shunted out of the tour by ICC after huge backlash took place. No field umpires had complained about ball tampering and yet Denness had the audacity to drag SRT into it. ICC later overruled Denness' verdict and waived off SRT's one-test ban too.
Similar was Dravid's case. He was found cleaning the ball using saliva but accidentally the lozenge which was in his mouth stuck to his fingers and it was proven that he did not do it intentionally. Moreover lozenge is allowed inside a cricketing pitch and hence it did not amount to using 'foreign' elements to change the shine and shape of the ball.
But what the Australians led by rogue Warner and cheater Smith did was planned in advance. They tactfully used Bancroft for this since he's a low profile and most junior player of side and hence won't be attracting attention from anyone. They brought in a sand paper post lunch and used it. When caught, Lehman had hands on his lips (so that no one reads his lips and the message he was sending) and Handscomb used walkie-talkie to get someone's signal after which he walked into the pitch and passed on the message to Smith & Co. Following this these cheaters used their underwear to hide the sand paper and Bancroft appeared in front of the umpires with the cloth pieces used for cleaning goggles. Such elaborate plan which also had Starc, Lyone and Hazelwood party to it. One year ban for such a heinous crime is not enough. It is as bad and as effective as match fixing, because both are aimed at affecting the end result of the match.
Sreesanth, Azarduddin, Prabhakar, Cronje, Ajay Sharma etc got banned for life for fixing. Mohammad Amir, Asif, Salman Butt got banned for more than 5-10 years. But these Australians are escaping with just 1 2 months ban! Skin indeed matters!
