Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (HB)

Udupi, Jun 8: Two persons who were travelling in a car had a narrow escape after their car went up in flames on the national highway near Brahmavar here late evening on Friday June 8.

Karthik, who owns the Hyundai i20 car, along with another person was driving from Udupi to Kundapur when the incident took place.

When they reached near Brahmavar, Karthik sensed a smell emanating from the car engine. He parked along the side of the road and found that the battery had caught fire.

Karthik immediately called the fire personnel, however, as they had to come all the way from Kinnimulky and Malpe, it took at least half an hour for them to reach the spot. By then, the car had completely caught fire.

Luckily, Karthik and his co-traveller had managed to get out of the car on time. No injuries were reported.

Despite the heavy rains at the time of the incident, the car was completely burnt.

Traffic was affected for sometime due to the incident.

In an incident at Kavoor in Mangaluru on June 1, another Hyundai i20 had caught fire and the cause was said to be short circuit.

I think in the last couple of months, This is the 3rd i20 car to go up in flames!. If it was in any western country, all the cars would have had to be recalled to check for electrical system and also heavy fine imposed on the company!!!. Here it's mere news and no one is bothered!

I do not think it is manufacturing defect. As a fellow road commuter, I saved a Honda civic last year when thick smoke oozing out , quickly opened the bonnet, bonnet supporting rod was touching battery terminals and culminated fire. car was driven by lone middle aged woman she had no idea on the cause. gently lifted the rod by folded newspaper, used the same to extinguish the fire since it was initial stage, and two bottles of water doused the fire completely. This worked one time....if the fire is not controlled at initial stage best is to say few meters away until fire brigade arrives. One small cylinder of fire extinguisher and knowledge on how to use it can save the car in most occasions...but as a law of average how many keeps it handy?

If there was a short then fuse should have blown.....one usual cause for battery lugs to go up in flames is a loose connection between the high current lug and battery terminal. Similar to a situation like a welding electrodes if I should approximate the setup.

Make sure the battery terminals are tight and coat the positive terminal with pet jelly

Companies should supply a mini fire extinguisher in all vehicles as per law. Due to cost cutting they do not supply it and no one care until they are in a accident.

Thank God the passengers are safe.

Now the to claim the insurance they have to go through hell and back - Good Luck

There is no such law for all vehicles! Only commercial vehicles are required to keep a fire extinguisher but most keep a bucket of water and say it's fire extinguisher!!!

Car worth lacs of rupees. As per international safety standards each vehicle must have one fire extinguisher in it costing few thousand rupees. Worth the money if one counts the cost of life and car....
