Lonah Salpeter wins first European track title for Israel

Berlin, Aug 9 (IANS): Kenyan-born Lonah Chemtai Salpeter gave Israel its first ever track gold in the women's 10,000 metres event at the 2018 European Athletics Championships here, winning the hard-fought race in 31:43.29.

Leading the opening kilometre was Romania's Ancuta Bobocel, but Salpeter, 29, managed to accelerate the pace through 2,000m in 6:23.94 and left the Romanian as well as the defending champion, Turkish Yasemin Can, behind on Wednesday, reports Efe.

The Netherlands' Susan Krumins finished second, nine seconds after Salpeter, and collapsed on the track after crossing the line.

Sweden's Meraf Bahta won the bronze medal, while the previous champion fell to the fifth place.

Salpeter came to Israel in 2008 as a nanny for the Kenyan ambassador's children and later ended up marrying an Israeli and obtaining nationality in 2016.

In the shot put event, Poland's Paulina Guba won the title throwing 19.33m in her final attempt taking gold, while Germany's Christina Schwanitz won silver (19.19m) and Belarus' Aliona Dubitskaya bronze (18.81m).

In men's long jump event, Greece's Miltiadis Tentoglou, 20, the gold medallist at the Junior European Championships in 2017, won the title thanks to his 8.25m jump in Round 5.

In the men's discus event, the host country's legendary Robert Harting, three-time world champion, two-time European champion and London Olympic champion, said goodbye to the German team with a sixth place with 64.33m.

Lithuania's Andrius Gudzius won the men's discus title with 68.46m, followed by Sweden's Daniel Stahl with 68.23m and Austria's Lukas Weisshaidinger with 65.14m.
