Udupi, Aug 14: Leaders of district Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal demanded the formation of a seven member committee for cow protection at the earliest.
Vilas Nayak, district president, VHP, speaking at Udupi press club here on Monday, August 13 said, “VHP and Bajrang Dal are demanding the district administration to protect cattle and stop its slaughtering. Bakrid is coming soon. Hence, people are getting ready to sell their cows, buffaloes, etc,”
“The high court passed an order on August 24, 2015 directing the state to form a seven-member committee to prevent mass slaughtering of animals during festive seasons. The deputy commissioner should be the chairperson of the committee, including superintendent of police, deputy director of Animal Husbandry department, RTA official, CEO of zilla panchayat, pollution control board officer, environmentalist, and local body member, as per the order. But the order has not been implemented,” he added.
“The police must install check posts in many places including border areas to prevent illegal cattle transportation. Farmers are ready to sell their cows in festive seasons. The concerned department must follow the order of the high court with no external pressure. If anyone violates this order, the committee should file contempt of court,” he said.
“Muslims should celebrate Bakrid with no beef or in a non-violent way. If anyone violates the order, the committee has to take stern action against them,” he demanded.
Sunil K R, co-convener of Bajrang Dal, Mangaluru division said, “The deputy commissioner has to convene an emergency meeting to create awareness about cow selling and slaughter. Aggressive publicity regarding protection of cows including aged cattle should be carried out. There are three Gau Shalas in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.”
VHP will submit an appeal to the district commissioner on August 17, he informed.
Pramod, secretary, Gau Rakshak unit and Bhagyashree and coordinator of Bhavani-Durga Bai wing were present.
