Mangaluru, Aug 15: The incessant rain that is pouring in the coastal region continued on Tuesday, August 14 also and put normal life out of gear. Vehicular traffic was affected due to landslides and flooding. As per the reports of the meteorology department, this rough weather conditions will continue for another two to three days.
In Kundapur, two people have lost their lives due to getting drowned in water. The body of Raghuram Shetty (54), a resident of Idoor - Kunjadi, who went missing on the night of Monday, August 13, was found in a drain on Tuesday.
BSNL employee, Shankar Poojary (58), a resident of Airbailu under Siddapur village limits fell into the pond when he tried to cross the same on Tuesday, August 14 and got washed away in the water. His body is not found till late evening.
According to Indiramma (74), a resident of Saukoor in Kundapur, this kind of heavy downpour was last witnessed 36 years ago in the year 1982.
The National Disaster Response Force ( NDRF) team is being called from Andhra Pradesh as a precaution as all the dams are filled and there is a likelihood of releasing of water from the dams, which may cause severe flooding in low lying areas. The NDRF team is likely to reach Kundapur on Wednesday August 15.
Vehicular movement is prohibited in Madikeri - Sampaje road due to a landslide. Shiradi Ghat has borne the brunt of hill collapses in several places. Kumaradhara and Netravati rivers are overflowing. For the first time since 2013, both the rivers have joined each other at Uppinangadi.
The flood waters in Subramanya have reached Subramanya Junior college. This phenomenon has taken place after 34 long years.
Apart from the coastal region, Malnad and Kodagu regions are also pounded with heavy downpour coupled with thunderstorms. In addition, water is getting flown from the neighbouring states of Maharashtra and Kerala. Because of this almost all the dams of Karnataka are either filled to the brim or overflowing.
KSRTC buses plying from Mangaluru depot to Bengaluru and Mysuru are cancelled due to the landslide at Shiradi Ghat and also due to the heavy rain. Only express buses are plying via Charmadi Ghat. 40 buses plying from Bengaluru towards Dharmasthala, Subramanya and Kundapur are also cancelled by the KSRTC authorities.
Mangaluru - Bengaluru train is cancelled for the next three days as a hill has collapsed and fallen on the tracks at Yedakumeri.
