Mangaluru, Aug 17: The assistant parish priest of St Sebastian Church, Permanur, Fr Stany Pinto and locals staged protest on August 17, Friday, against the negligence of MESCOM, following the death of Ashok D’Souza. The 28-year-old lost his life in Ullal on Thursday evening after coming in contact with a live wire fallen on the ground, which was cut due to the high-velocity wind.

Protesting against Ashok’s body being taken away, they held MESCOM, revenue department and municipal council responsible for his death.

Speaking to the media, Fr Pinto said that Ashok’s family is very poor and Ashok was the main breadwinner. “The family is now ruined. The incident happened as electric cables snapped. Therefore Rs 25 lac compensation should be paid to his family. Besides, the municipal council should construct suitable roads for the people here as the area comes under council limits. Minister U T Khader has promised highest compensation. Therefore, the department should provide the same,” he demanded.

Tahsildar Guruprasad assured to pay Rs five lac on priority to the family. “It is raining very heavily here since the last five days. The revenue department is working round the clock. The death of Ashok was unfortunate. Therefore, I will recommend for special compensation from the chief minister for the poor family,” he said. He also assured compensation by MESCOM after investigations. “Road cannot be constructed due to local elections. It will be constructed after elections and after obtaining survey numbers of the land and holding discussions with concerned officials,” he added.

He asked the concerned staff to speak to the forest department officials regarding cutting trees in the vicinity.

Not ordinary rain, warns Tahsildar

Tahsildar Guruprasad has warned families living near rivers in the district. He said that two people are washed away near Mooduperar in rain water on Thursday. “There are floods in Kolambe, Adyapadi, Pavooru and parts of Pavooru Uliya. People staying in low lying area should know that this is not ordinary rain. Water has increased on Thursday after 11 pm. As floods will increase in low lying areas, those staying in such areas should follow instructions from the district administration,” he stressed.

Mangaluru City Corporation deputy commissioner - revenue, Gayatri Nayak said that the district administration has taken precautions in time. “There are suspicions that the cable snapped due to the storm. As per the request of the locals, we will provide highest compensation possible. People should join hands with the department to prevent such accidents. People should avoid walking in flood water at night. The compensation will be handed to the family after the department receives the post-mortem report,” she added.

MESCOM officer Dayanand, Rajesh, municipal commissioner of Ullal Vani Alva and others were present.

Breadwinner of the family

Ashok is the eldest among Evri and Monica D' Souza’s three children. As Evri was sick, Ashok took up the family’s responsibility. He used to earn income by constructing boats and selling tender coconuts.

On Thursday, Ashok as usual set to work and has even met a few friends. He had received a call from his home and was on the way back, when the incident happened. As water had flooded half a kilometre from his house, Ashok started wading in the water. He was electrocuted when a live electric wire snapped and fell into the water.

Meanwhile, his family kept waiting as Ashok had told he is on his way home. They later pacified thinking Ashok must have stayed in a friend’s home due to rains. The incident came to light on Friday morning when some neighbours spotted his dead body floating in the water and informed the same to the family. Municipal councillor Sunder Uliya visited the spot and informed MESCOM department and police.

Ashok was the family’s pillar of strength. His parents are inconsolable.

    RIP Ashok!
Mescom is a third rate power supply company!
Chances of perishing in an accident or electric shock are very very high in DK!

In recent times many number of innocents lost their lives or got maimed due to negligence of Mescom!

All parties should get together and file a "class action suit" against Mescom; am sure they will get huge compensation, instead of begging for crumbs, and Mescom too will learn a big lesson!!

Compensation is only a consolation to the family. Efforts put in by all are appreciable.
But most important thing is, the negligence of concerned officials from MESCOM is ignored. Starting with executive engineer, right down till the line man should be prosecuted and arrested for murder of innocent victim.

Hats off to you Fr. We need people like you to lead whenever poor people get injustice because of powerful people and companies. Mescom is fully responsible for the incident as safety system has not worked when the live wire grounded. Safety system might be bypassed or not at all at place or not working. Mescom has to investigate and punish the responsible person for the failure of safety system. Inspection and testing of all safety systems are the routine maintenance activities to be done periodically which might have not followed also..My request to Mescom is to take the responsibility and pay the compensation to Ashok family, learn from this incident and make an action plan so that similar incident doesn't happen again!

This rain has taken many lives, poor ones are suffering more. And to add to their misery, mescom has again did their best .Very sorry to hear that this unluck hit one more family.Heartfelt sympathys to the bereaved family members.Mescom itself should have controlled where and what mishap has happened and shut off the electricity (high voltage). In this rain noone wants to play with wires.Good that parish priest took the initiative to help the family.May his soul rest in peace.Hope the Govt.really or Mescom?pays them the compansation.otherside people too sometimes take some interest that wires are not touching their trees or coconut trees,or cut branches of their trees near the wires before monsoon.

MESCOM must be fined heavily. All electric cables must be made underground compulsorily. MLA U T Khader please take this issue seriously.

Its a shame in India that without an agitation the authorities fail to respond even though death is caused due to their negligence. MESCOM authorities should have a conscience. What would they do if their own children had died in such mishaps? Would they condone the death and pardon the department? Congratulations Fr Pinto for taking the lead. The Catholic Church should fight for the rights of the poor and downtrodden even if it antagonizes the authorities.

Hats off to Fr. Pinto who came to streets in support of the poor family and fight for justice. You are truly follower of Jesus Christ. You are such a good example and shown to the people that there is no point in fighting in the name of religion but fight for justice.

I feel sad for Ashok Dsouza's family. I also feel happy that Fr. Stany Pinto former APP of Bejai Church now with Permannur church has done a commendable job in coming forth and questioning the govt depts. for their faulty infrastructure. Mangalore may have the best of schools, colleges and hospitals but we lack the basic infrastructure. Without any argument or questions asked the department should pay compensation on the basis of the last salary drawn by Ashok Dsouza x12 x 30 years upto the date of his retirement with a increase 2% increment every year. This money should be handed over to the Permannur church who will accordingly disburse it monthly to the family to meet their needs. Giving huge money in the hands of the family could get misused by family members other the parents of Ashok Dsouza. Permannur church can be guardian to the parents of Ashok Dsouza. RIP Ashok Dsouza.

RIP, Mescom does shabby work. I have seen HV cables fall without rains and floods. Shoddy work by contractors is appreciated by the officials. In my village anyone without any liecense to work turns off the supply at will and the officials of Mescom sit scarecrows heating their chairs at the substation. SHAME.

My sincere sympathies to the bereaved members of the family.

Father Pinto... you have indeed set an example for others to follow. The job of a priest is not just to preach and pray but to come forward to help the poor and the needy. This is just what you have done. MAY THE GOOD LORD BLESS YOU.
