Mangaluru: MRPL's Rs 595 crore RO plant to desalinate seawater

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Aug 18: The Government of Karnataka has given permission to Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) to set up reverse osmosis (RO) based desalination plant at Mangaluru.

With this, MRPL’s dependency on fresh water for its operations will reduce as the Rs 595 crore plant will have a capacity to desalinate 13 million gallons seawater per day.

The plant which is expected to be ready by 2020 will be set-up on the 15 acre land provided by New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT).

MRPL Chairman Shashi Shanker in his report to shareholders had explained that the desalination plant will become an alternative source of water and reduce risk of depending on freshwater, which is currently the single source.

At present, MRPL which needs 13 MGD water obtains 7-8 MGD from freshwater sources. It also operates an RO plant with a capacity of 3.4 MGD where municipal sewage water is treated. This will give the refinery additional 3 MGD water.

Shanker said that 2 MGD water will be supplied to Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilisers (MCF).

MRPL is also undertaking Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) project of 400 m3/h capacity. This projects falls in line with MRPL’s ‘zero effluent discharge to sea’ vision. The capital expenditure for this project is pitched at Rs 339 crore and Engineers India Limited has completed the feasibility study for the project.

Once the ZLD is implemented, it will further reduce MRPL’s dependency on freshwater by 15 per cent, Shanker said.

MRPL is also gearing up to produce BS-VI standard diesel by March 2019 and petrol in December 2019. Land has been identified to set-up 2G Ethanol project and will be acquired through Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board. The Licensor selection for the technology is in progress, and the project may get commissioned by 2021.

MRPL is desalination water for its own process requirement and not for general public. RO set up is a standard peace of equipment in all coastal refineries including RIL Jamnagar , IOCL and BPCL. Some people are feeling happy thinking that the water is for general public use. This RO and Demineralized water costs 10 times more than your normal water. Huge pressures are required to pump water through RO membrane filters thus consuming huge power. Future actually lies in graphene based filteration which of course is in preliminary stages of development.

WOW ..That is good news ..sustainable development ..is the key ..hopefully the engineers will do a great job ..Also the BS-VI fuel is much needed as the quality is less human harming ..
The long term strategy or vision should be to move towards electric vehicles and atleast to begin with hyrbrid models.
The desalination plant is a move in the right direction. With a little bit of social concern the MRPL should own the NH stretch between NITK and Kulur ..the entire industrial (panamabur, suraktal, bykampady) should be maintained by MRPL

desalination plant is badly required for Mangalore since Mangalore is very near to sea.
Mangalore is rapidly developing. more and more buildings and industries are comming up in Mangalore. to meet the need of fresh water desalination plant is highly recommended. at least this water can be supplied to new buildings water need. This water can be used for toilets, washing machines, bathing and other purposes in multistory buildings with separate line.

What this article doesn't mention is that this plant is coming up in the place wjere there used to be NMPT guest house in the way to tannirbavi beach. And thousands of trees that were chopped off for this. If you are going to the beach on a weekend, keep an eye on this place..it looks barren and empty, just like our future if we keep massacring trees like this every single day..

You start any plant but give job opportunities to the local youth only. Our youth go to far away places like Gulf, Afghanistan, Malaysia,Singapore,Mumbai,Bangalore in search of jobs & we have been deprived of high paying jobs with plenty of benefits locally here. Be it UPCL-ADANI or MRPL or OMPL or ISPL or SEZ or for that matter any other private company... Only call center jobs are available for local youth....
When we return from those above places either by losing job or some other reason we don't no what to do here, hence we request you to provide job to the local youth only.... Don't give reasons that required skill not available here. People from far away places come here for education....
We the locals have been made jobless , all north Indians have been recruited in these companies.
    We need our jobs back.

If north Indians are ready to come and work in Mangalore, why can't you start your own company or business here and employ them. Population and economy of mangalore. Remember Mangalore is not grown because of government support, but by the entrepreneurship attitude of it's people.

This is a very Happy moment. Good news. My request to every one. Please donot waste water. We all know how precious water is. A special request to all those who have RO machines at their homes, Pleaer donot waste the water which is coming out of machine after fulteration in exit pipe. Though it may not be suitable for drinking it is not a dirty water. That water can be used fot washing car, washing plates, cleaning purposes and also for washing clothes ( though it is hard water).
Please connect that pipe to any type of storage or it can also be directed to sump also. I have seen in many places people treatingbit as dirty water and all water going waste. We all are answerable to The Lord Almighty for every drop wasted. Thanks for reading.
