1,500 stranded in flood-hit Kodagu, CM Kumaraswamy visits affected areas

Kodagu, Aug 18 (IANS): Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Saturday visited the flood-hit Kodagu district in the southern state, where hundreds are marooned in villages and towns due to heavy rains.

"At least 1,500 people are stranded in various parts of the district, but the rescue officials have not been able to reach them due to bad weather and landslides. Efforts are being made to rescue them," Kumaraswamy told reporters here.

The Chief Minister earlier in the day held a meeting with district officials on the flood situation in Kodagu, and on heavy rains lashing coastal and south interior districts.

He made an aerial survey of the coffee-growing district, about 270km from the state capital Begaluru. THe district is one of the worst-hit districts in the southern state.

"The officials are trying to airlift people in the district, but the weather has not been very favourable," the Chief Minister said.

Heavy rains, flooding and landslips in the district have claimed six lives so far, a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said.

The state has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of those who lost their lives due to the rains.

The Chief Minister earlier announced Rs 200-crore fund to take up relief measures in the rain-hit districts.

Kumaraswamy, who also visited a relief camp in Madikeri in the hilly district in Western Ghats, told people that the state is taking up rescue and relief operations on a war-footing.

The water being released from Harangi reservoir in the district across Harangi river, one of Cauvery's tributaries, has been flooding several towns and villages in the region.

Over the last 24 hours, Madikeri received a very heavy rainfall measuring up to 30 cm, while the district received an average rain upto 16 cm, according to the weather office.

About 60 Dogra Regiment soldiers and 12 expert naval divers rescued 873 marooned people in the flood-hit district till Friday, where overnight heavy rains caused landslides and inundated low-lying areas at Makkanduru.

Another 525 personnel from the fire services, home guards and civil defence teams are working on the rescue operations in the district.

In all, 948 specialised rescuers from various state and central agencies are working in Kodagu district, a CMO statement said.

So far, more than 1,250 people have been rescued and shifted to about 30 relief camps set up across the district, the statement added.

Heavy rains have also been lashing coastal districts of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada over the past few weeks.

The Bengaluru division of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts heavy rains will continue over the next two days in the coastal and south interior districts of the state, including Kodagu.

While natural calamities including those due to global climate change are tragic, cruel and inhuman, it is regretful to watch the national TV channels focus exclusively on Kerala and a few on Kodagu too. Incidentally, they also mention Kodagu as a district of Kerala. Well, there is an occasional mention of a pregnant lady rescued in Sullia.
What no one is focusing or mentioning, is the dire-situation in Sullia district too. Unlike multiple airports, extensive railways and harbour's, Sullia, Malnad and Dakshina Kannada districts have been ignored for decades, the pumpwell flyover being a classic case.
The massive landslides and deluge of water out there have not only disappeared ‘entire villages’, the non-stop rainfall has literally turned the Jalsuru-Sampaje highway into a big river, with giant boulders, concrete blocks and all! Poor and helpless people are awaiting relief at various betta's and schools in Sampaje, Chembu and Aranthodu in Sullia district.
The astrologer-driven CM is focussing on Madikeri alone, after granting Rs. 500 crores to Kerala which has highest amount of NRI remittances in the country apart from highest excise revenues while many Gulf states have already sent millions of dollars of aid. Apart from Sullia, several acres of crops are already flooded in Vittla, Puttur, Kadaba, Bantwal, Ullal, Belthangady and Sullia Taluks.

Thanks to the publicity on charity and relief contributions, opportunists and online scams are increasing by the day. People easily fall prey to scamsters, fraudsters and fake NGOs.

If remaining 28 states in India helps Kerala and 29 Districts in Karnataka helps Kodagu, we can rebuild both Kerala and Kodagu within short time.

We should learn from Japan, where frequent earthquakes, Tsunami & Flood occurs, but every time Japan bounce back with no time.

In India we have all talents but only hurdles are religion and politics and their dumb followers.

Whle most of Costal and interior Karnataka is suffering due to rains and floods, whole focus is shifted only to Kerala at present. This shows once again, Keralites unitedly attempt to get sympathy from not only in India, but around the world.

Kumaranna has been gracious to extend help to Kerala (on a humanitarian ground), right from the begin, while his own people were and are still going through this tragic calamity. Kumaranna is also doing his best in the service of the effected people of Karnataka.

One must remember, Kerala has highest amount of NRI remittances in the country, good tourism income, high liquor consumption and other services as well.

I have been also trying to inform Keralites, it is high time they put to use all the gold hoarded in temples since centuries, at this juncture, rather than gaining sympathy of Modi and others in vain.

This accumulated gold acquired mostly through illegal means by the persons donated it with selfish purposes for centuries, will come to the rescue of Kerala.

Besides, Keralites should also must think as Indians, and donate the excess funds they will receive from this gold for the benefit of people suffering in Karnataka, who also helped them in their time of need, despite of having to endure the same hardship they themselves went through this time of the day.

Karnataka, having suffered a lot, and also had to write off useless loans in huge numbers need a lot of financial support for reconstruction, as well as to meet all budgetary obligations promised under the new govt.

My heartfelt sympathies to all my fellow Indians, going through natural calamities be it East or West, north or South, for we are all one people of our beloved mother land.

    Jai Hind!!!

    @Rita,
Well said, It is high time to prove our Indianess than regional narrow mentality.
Calamities strike to people irrespective of caste, creed, or nationality.
We Karnatakans also need sympathy and kindness of the larger world at this hour.

The number of people affected in Kodagu district is comparatively less compared to Kerala flash floods. But when it comes to agony and stress it is same for Kodagu people too. Kannadigas and other states must contribute Kodagu people to reconstruct their lives because these people have given many members of their family for defence of our Motherland. So these families must not be neglected considering affected numbers alone in account. Terraineous region and inclement weather makes one hard to reach this population to give an helping hand. Helicopters can be pressed to evacuate them and get admitted in relief camps till situation turns normal in Kodagu.
