Mangaluru: Refusing to give way to ambulance – car driver explains

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Sep 1: A video clip in which a taxi driver is seen blocking the way of an ambulance without allowing it to overtake his car for about ten kilometers had become viral earlier on social media. The ambulance was ferrying a patient to Mangaluru.

The driver of the car is identified as Dinesh Prabhu who hails from Mangaluru, and was returning from Bengaluru after dropping a passenger. However, his version differs from what is seen in the video.

Speaking to daijiworld.com Dinesh Prabhu said, "When I reached near Vagga, I noticed an ambulance right in front of my car moving without any siren. Roads near Vagga are in pathetic condition and are riddled with potholes, due to which ambulance had to slow down. During this time, I overtook the ambulance as the right side was clear to overtake. After moving few meters the ambulance driver switched on the siren and started honking repeatedly,"

“I even gave signal thrice for ambulance driver so that ambulance could overtake my car. But he did not overtake. The ambulance driver had enough opportunity to overtake my car. Instead of overtaking, they were recording the scene. This video has been done intentionally,” he added

“I am deeply hurt that the video has become viral. We always make way for ambulance. We respect the patient in the ambulance like how we respect our family members,” Prabhu said.

The video making rounds on social media has shocked many people, who have criticized the driver for his attitude.
According to the ambulance driver, they were in a hurry to reach Mangaluru as they were ferrying a patient and had to struggle to move freely.

Whatever may be the story...Its clearly a cab driver fault, ..... as a courtesy he could have put hazard/ left indicator and moved his vehicle bit left side of the road or at least put the hand out side the window signalling the ambulance to overtake him.

What if the patient in ambulance is one of your family member...? will you do the same ..?
Dont show your EGO on the road, karma may hit back hardly....

It is not the question of making way but when an ambulance appears, it is mandatory for all vehicles to stop and make way for the vehicle. One should realize that an ambulance is a LIFE SAVING VEHICLE.

Whether an ambulance has patient or not, if it sirens behind you, do not think much and just give way. (Even if the Ambulance driver misusing his position). Why cannot we follow this rule? Here, had this driver instead of justifying his action, apologized (even with the justification) and said that he would surely take note next time, he would have received lots of praises.

Dear readers: I have used this narrow road more than 100 times going to Belthangady/Moorje and return to Mangalore. Blaming someone is easy unless we drive on that route specially now as Shiradi Ghat is closed and vehicles including KSRTC buses use this narrow and Zig Jag road via Charmadi Ghat going to Bangalore and other parts of North Karnataka, like Raichur, Shivamogga and sorrounding places. All fake Explanation. As a good driver u should know how to give way for ambulance. U came into picture once the video was recorded or else u would be happy that u proved it speed more than an ambulance. It's a straight road and ambulance driver knows how to make way but you was disturbing his route. Shameless driver...

Since i seen this video in social platform . every one blaming driver only . Yes he is guilty and must be punished.

    Question is .......

Who captured the video ? Is ambulance driver or some one next to driver.

If ambulance driver captures then he is equally guilty as Mr.Prabhu cause shooting video with driving is more dangerous than not giving way to ambulance.

    People,

To get a Drivers License in any of the 50 States in US, you need to take a Theory test and pass at least with 90% marks...and then only Instructor will take a road test with you and if one pass this test ...then only person gets the Driver's License...

In India also they should do the same...if its done, I am sure 90% of road accidents could be prevented...

If Prabhumaam has a US Driver's Licence...he will stop if its a single road and give way to ambulance 100%...even if he is US President...and don't talk like this...this will be a question for his driver's license test as well...

I believe its more fault of the system ...than these ignorant driver's...

All Indian driver's need to be re-educated properly to avoid unnecessary loss of lives...

Let me explain the quality of license in India. My friend planned to by bike. He took lessons and once very comfortable driving a bike, gave the test. He went through the test and passed. However, when he received the license, it was for car and not motor bike! That is the state of our licensing authority. they themselves don't know what happened outside at the test center.

Regarding the article here, I have questions - how did the ambulance shot the video? Was there a patient on board? If the patient was there, then, do you have time to take video? Unless this part is not clear, there is no case here.

You are correct in that Vehicles have to give way to emergency vehicles which are using their emergency light and sirens. However, not all situations merit using sirens and lights. If a patients life is in danger, lights and sirens may be used. If the patient is stable, they may not be used. The ambulance crew should clarify whether they followed protocol on using emergency lights and sirens.

This cab driver Dinesh Prabhu is now cooking up stories after the humiliation he received following the Video that went viral on social media.
No matter whom Ambulance is carrying when the siren is blown why did this cab driver pull to the side and give way to the Ambulance to proceed. He thinks that public are stupid to believe that he did not get the opportunity to give way to the ambulance until 10 kms of distance of blowing siren. Authorities should get this guy to task and charge him a hefty fine so that he learns the lesson.
Arrogance and unprofessional driving habits of all these cab and auto rickshaw drivers is well known and does not require any explanation.

I take back what i wrote earlier. If this is true then the ambulance driver is abusing whatever powers he has. This is pathetic. But having said that the other day there was a cops car coming out of a fast food outlet in Melbourne, Australia. The lights had turned red n the cop not sure why he was in a hurry had his sirens out n jumped the red n then continued his way without them. Bottom line is power corrupts n absolute power corrupts absolutely. Jai Hind

    Dear All,

Both drivers should be questioned. Looks like both of them have own stories.

Ambulance driver his co worker was in hurry and managed to record incidents.

They abuse the privilege given to medical ambulance on the road by using the audio visual siren.

Both of them should be taken to police and given warning for the awareness of road and pedestrian safety .

Reading all these comments, I feel sad as to how much traffic Decipline we follow in India.

If you have a Ambulance with Siren behind you,
#1. You Change to slow lane, your if it is Two Lane road.

#2. If it is a Single Lane Road, then you put on Emergency Lights and stop on the side.

There is no question of who was the Ambulance carrying.
Regarding quesyion of recording video by the the Ambulance staff, please understand that the Para-Medic sits inside with the patient & cares for them & does not sit in front with driver.

I feel the driver should be arrested and charged and Decipline action taken due to not following "Road Safety Norms" and re-educted.

Forgive? But why? That was not a silly mistake to forgive, he did that intentionally to harm. Ambulance would have met with an accident or may be patient would have died because of his arrogance. Upon that he is cooking up chota bheem like stories and want us to believe him. He was driving too fast and even more speed while ambulance driver wanted to overtake him. Even a pickup truck and other vehicles which where in front of this taxi made way for ambulance but this guy did not bother, instead he was driving in same speed.

Mr Prabhu. You must thank almighty that you are in india, thats you are trying to bluff everyone by saying "nandhu yenu thappilla" even though in video it clearly shows how fast u wer driving, instead of slowing your car and making way for ambulance, u wer even trying hard to block the way of ambulance during overtake at last. If you wer such a driver in any gulf country you would have been jailed till now. Pathetic every vehicle in video wer giving way for ambulance but u wer taking opportunity of the siren to drive fast and blocked the way for ambulance.

The rule is to totally reduce speed or rather stop your vehicle and give way because the road is without decider. It seems you are driving at your speed and expect the ambulance to overtake. That is even dangerous. Let us learn by our mistakes and educate others.

But wait a Minute, The video does show Car not giving side for Ambulance, but did anyone confirm if Ambulance's Emergency was indeed Genuine one ? Please visit Youtube and check how Bangalore Traffic police takes a Ambulance driver to task who was taking some lady staff and students from a Medical college for a joyride by swithing on the Siren on the busy streets. You never know.

When it comes to traffic offenses, there should not be a discrimination between medical, paramedical persons and others. If the ambulance people were shooting a video, which is very likely, as it was posted on social media, then the people in the ambulance were not doing their duty of looking after the patient. In this case, strict action should be taken against the ambulance.
Large number of ambulances have been involved in accidents in Karnataka, where not only innocent patients have lost their lives, traveling in the ambulance but also many by-standers have also lost their lives. Ambulance is to save a life, not to take a life. Nobody is above the law. If a doctor or a paramedical person violates traffic laws, is he/she not supposed to pay a fine? Similarly, punishment should be given to the ambulance personnel, if they have violated the law. Also, traffic police should instruct hospitals to educate ambulance drivers that they should not use the sirens or honk continuously when there is no serious patient inside the ambulance. I have seen empty ambulances blaring sirens inside Mangalore. This has to stop.
