Udupi: Nurse Hazel Mathias’ mortal remains to arrive next week?

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Sep 20: As per the latest updates, NOC (No Objection Letter) has been obtained from the Saudi Embassy in order to repatriate the dead body of nurse Hazel Mathias, a resident of Shirva, who used to work at Al Miqua government hospital in Saudi Arabia and who committed suicide in the residential quarters of the hospital.

All the final processes to send Hazel's body back to India are completed and the photocopy of Aadhar card of Hazel's father Robert Quadras has been sent to Saudi Arabia in order to facilitate him to receive Hazel's mortal remains officially at Mangaluru International Airport.

The body of deceased Hazel needs to be sent to Riyadh for packing the same in a casket. However, this can be done only in the next week as it will be weekend in Saudi now.

It might be recalled that Hazel had committed suicide in her residential quarters on July 19. Dennis Noronha, who is the holder of the power of attorney, is continuing his efforts in Saudi in order to repatriate Hazel's body back to her native place and it is learnt that a clear picture with respect to the arrival of the body will be obtained only on September 23.

Getting the dead body released in Saudi Arabia is not an easy task. I don’t know the reason behind this, however if a foreigner dies in that country, then the ordeal one faces to get the body released cannot be explained.
Nearly two decades ago I lost a Mangalorean friend and colleague in a car accident. Just a day before he died he called me to inform that he would be going to India in a couple of days as his wife delivered their baby after 7 years of their marriage. He was quite excited to see his new borne child. However, his destiny was different. Next day while he was travelling in a car with his workmates, he and his companions met with a fatal accident and he died of his injuries in two days in a hospital. Our company had assigned a Saudi national who too was unable to get the body released quickly. I remember my experience of dealing with the Saudi hospital, how many times I had to call them to enquire on discharging the body. The hospital staff were just rude, uncaring and in word I would say uneducated to deal with people. Finally the body was released and I believe it took about a month.
What is the need of keeping the body for such a long period? How can the bereaved family wait for a month to arrive the body? We cannot question them why they work in slow motion as we are just “guest workers” there. In Hazel’s case it took two months to release the body and we cannot imagine the frustration of her family members. The good thing is finally the body is coming.
    RIP Hazel.

It is most unfortunate that the mortal remains of nurse Hazel Mathias will hopefully arrive in India next week after a more than two months of waiting. There is no clear picture why it took such a long time. We can just say, Hazel, RIP. It was an agony for her family members and loved ones.

May her soul rest in peace.
Very sad on the efforts put by Indian authorities (Local/National) to bring her back.
Can see the politics on normal people like us.

It is now two months after the death, still the family has not received the mortal remains of their beloved.

This shows the highly lethargic attitude of the Saudi authorities. Our external affairs should also have interfered in this matter.

We have to wait and see whether the family will get justice or not from the country where their beloved has served.

    Very unfortunate.

There is a solution to this kind of future happening. Suicide or murder once investigation is completed authorities of Saudi should have repatriated body. What they are waiting for?

First Eid, and now weekend!! Solution is our Goernment should create jobs here in India. Hospitals earn profits in crores and how much a nurses salary in India?

If only our nurses here in India are paid well half of these nurses wouldn't leave their kids/husband and go abroad without them. Also quality care to patients in India will increase. Do you know ratio of patient:nurse here in india? It is 20:2. If one or two patients takes larger portion of time of these two nurses other patients are deprived from their deserved care.

Thats true how much a nurse is paid in India ,some hospital not even pay 10k , Bcom, Mba,diploma holders etc get good salary. it is very sad to see nurses are paid less for the service they provide to man kind. my wife is nurse and i am proved of her,in some hospitals life of nurses is very bad, the work load they put on them ,15 to 16 surgeries with hardly few nurses end of the day when they come home and we can see the tiredness in their face easily, yesterday one of my friend who is a nurse in her chat told me there where 14 cases only 6 nurses, & yearly Nurses day is celebrated by a nurses Money, to get her own certificates they need to pay, that is the reason why most of nurses go to gulf or western countries because this countries know the value of a nurse. Hospitals makes crores of money & doctors are paid in lakhs , doctors perform the surgery and go, after that nurses take care of the patient with coordination with doctors, but doctors dont give sponge bath and clean up the patient all this dirty stinking job is done by a nurse or by a nursing aid in hospital, what is the salary of a nursing aid in hospital ?? what is the value for a nurse ??i say that nurses must be given equal respect like doctors..

The opinion you have about nurses is not true. In Western countries & especially the US, RN's do professional work & the rest you have mentioned is done by aids. Here RN's need to keep updating their certifications after graduating in nursing exam & they are paid accordingly like for each certification they keep adding hourly $ which is paid every month & they need to renew these certifications once every 2 years. Apart from this they get paid for attending classes on hourly basis, night & weekend pay & increment every 2 years if they perform their duties we'll. I must say that here RN's in specialized professions who are up-to-date with their certifications & Nurse Practioners are paid more than most of the IT professionals & even some entry level MBBS doctors.
