Udupi, Feb 8: A day-long workshop and seminar on filmmaking titled ‘Clapboard and beyond’ was inaugurated by Girish Rao Hatwar (Jogi), senior film journalist at Nutana Ravindra Mantapa, MGM College here on Friday, February 8.
The workshop was organised by the Department of Journalism of MGM College with an objective of understanding cinema and how it can be used as one of the tools of communication.
In the inaugural address, Girish Rao Hatwar said, “We can express our views through cinema without any limitations. Most of youth are emerging as filmmakers today. There are two types of cinema that are entertainment and learning. The scenario of acting in the film is changing in terms of stereotypes. Everyone is thinking that ‘I am an actor’ or ‘an actor lies in me’. Cinema is a medium of communication. If we think cinema is outdated, we cannot develop anything. Cinema brings variety in life. Films are made in broad day light, but ironically we watch it in a dark room. This applies to everyone’s life. Cinema is a review of one’s life,” he said.
“There are no limitations in cinema, in terms of expressing our opinion. However, the trends are changing in cine world. The small screen is used for making money. There is no parameter while making a film. While comparing cinema, there is no other medium that exists that can convey effectively one’s thought. There is huge difference between writing and making films. A lot of hurdles may come in our path,” he said.
“Today acting has become an imitation, but it should come out as natural. Let’s develop an interest of making short film from the college days,” he said in his address to students.
In the afternoon session, B A Samvarth Sahil, scriptwriter and lecturer, Manipal addressing the students said, “Aristotle said art is universal and imitated by all. Ratamuni said art is a global profession. In this way Cinema is an art. Hence, it is imitation and profession too. He explained about writing movies, making movies, watching movies to the students.”
Renowned director and actor Raj B Shetty said, “Cinema is an art, sociology and mirror. Film is a ‘world language beyond common language'. Today in movies, morality and justice are increasingly becoming popular. Today, most of the films are coming up concepts that touch emotions,” he added.
Dr MG Vijay, principal, MGM College, Malati Devi, principal, pre-university college, MGM and Arun Kumar, coordinator of IQAC were present on the occasion.
Manjunath Kamath, HOD department of Journalism delivered a keynote address and extended welcome.
