Bantwal, Feb 12: Three people were injured after a truck used for transporting crushed stone hit a car in which a newlywed couple was seated. The incident happened on Monday, February 11 at Kammaje near Kanyana, Vittal in the taluk.

A marriage function was held on Monday at Maratimoole in Kanyana. The family of the groom arrived at the house of the bride, and was taking her in their elaborately decorated Innova car towards Paivalike.  A lorry that was returning to Mangaluru after emptying a load of crushed stone at Kasargod, hit the car of the newlyweds at this point.

The front portion of the car was badly damaged. Three including a child were seriously injured. Two were admitted into a hospital at Uppal, whereas the child was admitted into a private hospital at Mangaluru. The bride and the groom however escaped unhurt.

Immediately after the accident, hundreds of villagers gathered at the spot and expressed their anger about the haphazard movement of heavy vehicles. They pointed out that movement of ten-wheeled heavy trucks on this road has been banned but they continue to use the road.  They said that these trucks create lot of problems for the general public and sought strict action against them.

When Vittal police tried to take custody of the lorry, the protesters stopped them, and demanded that the lorries should be handed over to transport officials.  They then called transport department officials at Bantwal and got assurance from them that the department will move against the lorry. Thereafter the villagers allowed the police to take custody of the lorry.
