Min temp dips but summer officially arrives in Mumbai: IMD


Mumbai, Mar 2 (TOI): In what could be the last spell of winter for Mumbai, the minimum temperature recorded on Friday morning dipped to 16.2 degrees Celsius, which was almost 3.2 degrees below normal. Weathermen from India Meteorological Department (IMD) have forecast a rise in temperature over the weekend.

Till a day back, the minimum temperature recorded by IMD Santacruz was 18.2 degrees.

While officially the winter months have ended, with IMD considering March to May as summer months, the "chill" prolonged. On Friday, the minimum temperature recorded at Santacruz was 16.2 degrees, which was 3.2 degrees below normal, while at Colaba, it was 20.5 degrees, which was 0.7 degree below normal.

Residents said that while the "chill" was evident in the morning and late at night, there was "discomfort" during the day. The maximum temperature recorded at Colaba and Santacruz was 30.8 degrees and 32.4 degrees respectively. At Colaba, the maximum was 0.1 degree below normal, while at Santacruz, it was normal.

K S Hosalikar, deputy director general of meteorology at regional IMD, said the dip in temperature during this period had been forecast. "The drop in minimum temperature was due to north-westerly wind over Mumbai region," he said.

Humidity levels recorded at Colaba and Santacruz were 69% and 51% respectively.
