Puttur: 'Vijaya-Vikrama' Kambala at Uppinangady on Mar 15

Puttur, Mar 12: A function to celebrate the silver jubilee year of 'Vijaya-Vikrama' jodukere Kambala will be held in the banks of Netravati river at Uppinangady on Sunday March 15.

A gold coin of two sovereigns will be presented to the winning pair of buffaloes, while the runner-up pair will get one sovereign gold coin in ‘Negilu Hiriya’, ‘Hagga Hiriya’, ‘Adda Halage’ and ‘Kana Halage’ categories of the buffalo race.

“The buffalo pairs winning in 'Negilu Kiriya' and 'Hagga Kiriya' categories will receive gold coin of one sovereign each, while the runners-up will receive gold coins of half sovereign. Apart from these, the owners of all the participating pairs will receive a silver coin each,” said Umesh Shenoy, president of the Kambala Committee, speaking at a press conference held here on Tuesday March 10.

K Sitaram Rai, convener, Vidyarashmi Educational Trust, Savanoor will inaugurate the Kambala at 9 am.

Shobha Karandlaje, minister for rural development and panchayat raj, Krishna J Palemar, Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister, D V Sadanand Gowda, member of parliament, B Nagaraj Shetty, chairman, Coastal Area Development Authority, Dhananjay Kumar, former union minister, MLA Mallika Prasad, Sucharita Shetty, president, DK zilla panchayat, and others will participate in the programme slated to be held in the evening.

Nellikaru Kuntadka Jinaraj Shetty, Yermal Rohit Hegde, Kakkyepadavu Punyedady Annu Bhandary, Sheena Shetty Veerakamba and Kollyottu Ananda Shetty will be felicitated for their achievement in the field of promoting Kambala folk sport, on the occasion.

Prakash Rai Bellipady, member, Kambala Committee and Abbas Bastikar, member of the gram panchayat were present at the press conference.
