Illegal sand transportation - lorry, sand, seized - one arrested

Kaup, Apr 25: Police personnel of Kaup station here, on Wednesday April 24, stopped a lorry that was illegally carrying sand to Udupi from Kannur Mangaluru, and took possession of the sand and the lorry. The police also arrested lorry driver Alok and registered case against two others involved in the act.

At around 4 am on Wednesday Kaup station officer Naveen Nayak received information about the illegal sand hauling. He then set barricades at the Kaup Polipu Junction to stop the lorry but it smashed the barricade and moved ahead. However, the police chased the lorry and managed to stop it at Kaipujal, Uliyaragoly.

The police said that the driver confessed that he was transporting sand belonging to Hussain Shabbir from Kannur to Udupi. He also revealed that Shabbir's brother, Nizamuddin, was providing him security escort in a car behind the lorry.

The police seized 15 tonnes of sand valued at Rs 1 5,000 along with the lorry.
