Puttur, Apr 26: A young man drowned in River Netravati when he and his friends were taking bath in the river at Uppinangady. He was a member of a four-member group from Hoskote, Bengaluru, who were in a tour. The incident happened on the evening of Thursday April 25.

The unfortunate victim of this incident has been identified as Muniya Gowda (28), son of Nanje Gowda from Edakanahalli in Hoskote. He was accompanied by his relatives, Satish Gowda, Suresh Gowda, and Srinivas. The group wanted to tour around Udupi, it is said.

The group members were on their way back to their native place when they stopped near Uppinangady to take bath. Muniya Gowda, it is said, jumped into the river from atop a boulder, and never emerged out of water thereafter.

A group of divers came on the scene to recover the body but waited for the arrival of the police before plunging into action. After the police permitted them, the divers went down and brought the mortal remains from deep within.

Speaking to media persons, Satish Gowda said that when returning from Udupi, they had a desire to take bath after seeing water in Netravati river. The group, which saw that young boys were also playing in water there, felt that the spot would not be dangerous. He said that while the others swam in the river, Muniya Gowda never came up after jumping. He recollected that the victim's father had also met death in a similar fashion.

Probationary assistant superintendent of police, Pradeep Gunti, and other police officials visited the spot. A case was registered in Uppinangady police station.
