Udupi, Mar 28: Members of the Manipal Sand Heart team carved out a sand sculpture to create awareness on global warming, on the beach at Kaup, 15 km from Udupi, on Friday.

The team began carving the sculpture early in the morning at 7.30 and finished work by noon. The artists were Srinath Manipal, Venki Palimaru and Ravi Hirebettu.

Leader of the team Srinath Manipal said one-half of the sculpture showed the earth and the other half a human face. The earth was shown cracking up due to global warming. The human face was shown as being in pain due to global warming. Below the sculpture is engraved a message: “Earth is in trouble.”

Wake-up call

“Global warming affects us all. We wanted to give people a wake-up call before it is too late,” Mr. Manipal said.

He said that in order to reduce global warming, the Manipal Sand Heart team wanted people to encourage their friends to grow plants by gifting them saplings. Children should be encouraged to grow plants. They should be told of the consequences of global warming. People should use recyclable products and should encourage renewable energy initiatives, Mr. Manipal added.
