Bangalore, Mar 30: REWABE (Residents’ Welfare Association, Bangalore East), in collaboration with Rotary, Bangalore Downtown, organized a talk on ‘Disaster Management’ on Saturday March 30 at Don Bosco Provincial Hall,  Milton Street, Bangalore

The talk which covered law and order, fire hazard, ATS home guards, civil defence and the like, was by Dr Jija Madhavan Hari Singh IPS, director general of police and commandant general, home guards.

She is the only woman among the 95 DGPs leading the police force in the centre and in the state.

Dr Singh was also nominated for the ‘Public Service Excellence Award’ by AIMA (All India Management Association) in 2008-09 and is the recipient of the Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President of India’s Police Medal for distinguished service.

The hall was packed to listen to Dr Singh talk from experience and share her knowledge. The opening remarks and welcome address were by Chandra Mohan Pishe of Rotary Bangalore Downtown and Vaidyanathan of REWABE, respectively.

Dr Singh said that we have to be mentally prepared for any kind of disaster in life, may it be fire or earthquake, floods or accidents.

She said that it was a disaster when people are unaware of how to face the situation. Most of the disasters happen due to negativity and a lack of awareness. She also spoke about forming ward leaders wherein the RWAs and Rotarians have to come together and work  whereby these leaders will be authorized to take corrective action in case of any disasters.

“‘Self-help is the best help”, Dr Singh added. She also stressed on the need for making the city greener by planting more saplings.

The event also had a power point presentation depicting various global disasters. An interactive secession followed the talk and presentation.
