Udupi, Apr 1: The district unit of the State Council of Physically Handicapped and Souharda Vedike, Karkala, jointly staged a protest on Wednesday April 1 in front of the office of the deputy commissioner.

It was done to urge the state administration to suspend Karkala town police sub-inspector (SI) Ramachandra Nayak for inhumane treatment of Xavier Thomas Castelino, a physically and mentally retarded resident of Palli village in Karkala taluk.

The protesters alleged that Castelino was summoned to the police station by Nayak recently over a property issue and during this time was treated inhumanely and Castelino’s elbow was broken.

The protesters also demanded the suspension of assistant SI Gopalakrishna Nayak, and constable Benjamin Pais.  Despite a complaint being lodged with the woman police officer, no action was taken by her in this regard, they alleged.

Meanwhile, Castelino is undergoing surgery at district Government Hospital here under the care of district unit of State Council of Physically Handicapped.  The protesters alleged that although this incident has occurred in the district of state home and district-in-charge minister Dr V S Acharya, he has not taken any action adding insult to injury.

Council president Wilfred Gomes, treasurer Herald Coutinho, Dinakar Kenjoor, Souharda Vedike Shubada Rao, Hemant, Dayanand, and Prakash Rao were present on the occasion.

What can you expect from V.s. Acharya??? He is already an physically imbalanced home minister. Hence forth we can only see police force showing their power on the poor and the handicaped only.
