Udupi, Apr 27: Rain god smiled on the twin-districts on Sunday April 26, bringing relief to the people who have been suffering due to the increasing heat of the sun and the election campaigning.  The rains came at a time when the heat is at its peak, complicated by the heat generated by the electioneering that has been brisk, considering that Tuesday April 28 will be the last day for electioneering in both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Lok Sabha constituencies, where polling will be held on the 30th of this month.

Manipal, Udupi, Kundapur, Koteshwar, Hemmady, Tallur, Byndoor, Shirur, Uppunda, the eastern stretch from Petri to Chantar besides Kaup, Shirva etc., got copious rains. Places like Shirlalu, Ajekar, Andar, Yeenehole, Muniyal etc., in Karkala taluk got hailstorms. The rains were coupled with light thunder and lightning.

In several places, complaints of electricity connection getting severed were reported. In some villages, telephones too stopped functioning after the rain.

In Dakshina Kannada district, most places in Beltangady taluk got rain coupled with speeding gale. About 60 cement sheets of the roof of a house in Arasikatte village blew away, causing a loss of about Rs 50,000 to Rajavarma Jain, owner of the house. Tiles of a few shops and houses too were blown away by the wind.  Beltangady had also received some rain on Saturday night.

Sullia town and nearby places were drenched in rain that fell on Sunday evening, coupled with lightning and thunder. No losses were reported. Arantodu village and nearby places had to go without power due to rain and winds. Moodbidri got only a light drizzle.

There was however, no respite for the citizens of Mangalore city as rain played truant for them.
