Udupi, Jul 27: A peer group of Udupi has come forward to save river Indrani by launching a motorcycle rally called ‘Ride for the River' which will be held on July 28.

The rally will begin from Indrali temple and will be culminated at Kalmadi.

Indrani river originates from Indrali near temple. Three streams unite near Indrali and it flows through Beedinagudde, Kalsanka, Nitturu and Kambalakatta. Further, it passes behind Sri Kodavoor Shankaranarayana temple, and then joins Kalmady rivulet.

Earlier, this water was used by many families, now it is polluted. Ones upon a time many farmers were using the water for agriculture purpose. Now it has become poisonous and its colour turned black. City Municipality Council is discharging contaminated water to the river.

From Indrali to Kalmadi, there are thousands of families. From Kalsanka, sewage allowed to flow directly to the river water. Drainage water flows into the stream without any hindrance.

Rainfall is declining and under water level is also going down from years to years, due to rise in temperature. It is essential to save water resources for better future.

“If Indrani become free of wastage, it is guaranteed to solve half the city's drinking water problem in the summer. This would be a great water source for future,” says the rally convener Srikanth Shetty.

Not only peer group, but also people from different organizations, environmentalists, nature lovers, teachers and youth organizations have joined hands to save the river.
