Mangaluru: Cheque dishonour - Court imposes Rs 24.8 lac fine

Mangaluru, Jan 8: In a cheque dishonour case, the fourth JMFC court here has imposed fine of Rs 24.8 lac on Lokanath Shetty from Suratkal. Lokanath Shetty had issued the said cheque in favour of Lamina Employees Cooperative Society.

Shetty had issued cheque of Rs 19.07 lac to the society towards funds misuse. When the cheque was presented in clearing, it was returned unpaid for want of funds. The society ha thereafter filed case against Shetty under section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.

Advocate,Udayananda A, had argued the case on behalf of the petitioners.

    If the cheque for 19.07 lac was dishonored for lack of funds, from where this guy will get money pay the fine of 24.8 lac - or is it a way to send him to prison for non-payment of fine?
