Kasargod, Jan 13: The Goan police have arrested five persons from this place, after finding them to be in possession of banned currency notes worth Rs 1.5 crore. The investigation connected with this case has been extended to the district.

Abdul Khader (44) from Slampady here, as well as B Saleem and B Yousuf (32) residing near the TV station at Anangur, Razack (45) from Citizen Nagar in Chengala here and Abubakker Siddiqui (24) from Alampady were arrested by the Goan police, who also seized a car in which these five were travelling. Three more persons from Goa too have been arrested in this respect.

The five persons named above were travelling to Goa in a car bearing Kerala registration number when the Goan police subjected their car to inspection at Polam check post on Goa - Karnataka border. The police found currency notes hidden in covers. All the notes seized during the operation were of Rs 1,000 face value, the policemen stated.

On the basis of information extracted from the arrested persons, three others who were arranging to receive the said cash were taken into custody. The police said that those in the car told them that they were offered five lac rupees by way of commission to deliver the consignment of currency notes to people of Goan origin.

The arrested persons are in judicial custody now, and the police propose to take them into police custody. In addition to the police, even income tax department, Kasargod police, income tax department and central and state intelligence departments have begun probe. The police are trying to find out the source of these currency notes now.
