Udupi, Feb 15: A day-long workshop on 'Alcoholism, Family and Children' was organized as part of 'Children of Alcoholics Awareness Week 2020', inaugurated at Dr A V Baliga memorial Hospital, here on Friday February 14.

Dr R V Baliga, trustee of A V Baliga Charities inaugurated the workshop.

In his inaugural address, R V Baliga said, "In spite of all the awareness, youth are getting attracted and will be addicted to alcohol. Social workers play an important role in identifying alcoholics. 10% of road accident cases are directly and indirectly related to drink and drive. A drunkard may injure others also. Hence, youth must think prudently about this."

Dr PV Bhandary, Psychiatrist, A V Baliga Memorial Hospital in his presidential address said, "According to research, most of road accidents and suicides at a young age are happening because of alcohol. There is a misconception that drink can be controlled and is not very dangerous. The habit starts in a casual way but 25 out of a total of 100 will be regular drinkers. It takes twelve to sixteen hours to come out from intoxication. Women are at a greater risk of drinking alcohol than men which may lead to complications during pregnancy.

"No political party or government has come forward to implement the alcohol prohibition act or moderate drinking act. Alcohol-addicted parents can have a significant impact on children’s mind set." Hence parents should be aware of this and educate their children also."

Dr Deepak Mallya, Dr K S Latha were present.

Dr Virupaksha Devaramane, psychiatrist A V Baliga Hospital delivered the keynote address and extended a welcome. Girish M N compered the programme.

Following the formal stage function, a seminar session was held on the topic 'Alcoholism, Family and Children'.

MSW students from Udupi, Ujire participated in the workshop.
